Welcome to the June edition of the Science Brief newsletter of the ESRF! Discover the latest news of the ESRF, including two Nature papers hot off the press, one on the neural circuits that coordinate leg and wing movements in the fruit fly🪰 and another one on an “off switch” in legume plants 🌿that shuts down the process by which they convert atmospheric nitrogen into nutrients. Happy reading! 📖

Preprint: "Here, we provide a set of recommendations for sharing code, with an eye toward guiding those who are comparatively new to applying open science principles to their computational work. Additionally, we review existing literature on the topic, summarize the most common tips, and evaluate the code-sharing policies of the most influential journals in biology, which occasionally encourage code-sharing but seldom require it." https://lnkd.in/dZhPVVR7

How are otherwise stable C-H bonds activated? In our latest study we used theoretical methods to explore the light-driven, Rhodium-catalyzed C-H activation of alkanes. The manuscript was just accepted in ChemPhotoChem is available as open-access article: https://lnkd.in/eccscB7g Our main findings: 1. trans-Rh(PMe3)2(CO)(Cl) undergoes a a light-driven CO dissociation as initial step. 2. After the excitation a triplet state is formed, which can undergo different rearrangements. 3. The triplet state is rather stable and thus not active for C-H activation. Instead the singlet ground state of cis-Rh(PMe3)2(Cl) is the active species for C-H activation. This detailed photophysical picture confirms our findings from our initial study on the topic: https://lnkd.in/e-HhAXAk

Bernd has been pushing this point for a while, and I think he is right. Self correction is an important part of the scientific process and journals, funders, and institutions need to do more to encourage it. 'What can journals do to support both self-correction by authors and by the community? We have discussed this matter for a decade at EMBO Press, culminating in a workshop that recommended to make an explicit distinction between an author initiated- and an externally initiated- or even forced retraction. We use the term “withdrawal” for the former and reserve “retraction” for the latter.' https://lnkd.in/es-SsmaZ

Alhumdulillah! By the grace of Almighty ALLAH, Our second research work entitled "Design and analysis of a highly sensitive SPR based PCF biosensor with double step dual peak shift sensitivity", has been published in Scopus Indexed Heliyon journal" (Q1, Impact Factor: 3.776) published by Elseiver. A multifunctional SPR-PCF sensor capable of RI sensing, temperature sensing as well as verifying it by DS-DPSS is proposed in this manuscript. Gold and AZO are both used as the plasmonic material exhibiting different result and different sensing capabilities. I want to convey my heartfelt gratitude to our supervisor, Mohammad Rakibul Islam Sir and Md. Moinul Islam Khan bhai for his guidance and mentorship throughout this research journey. I would also like to mention my fellow co-authors Ahmad Jarif Yeasir and Tajudddin Ahmed Nahid for their dedication and contribution during this research work. Do you want a comp bio portfolio to show employers but don't know where to start? Dean Lee's, F1L, gives you a running start! His process enables anyone to build a portfolio by re-enacting Figure 1 of biology papers. Check out the full article/post below!
My article last year called "How to become an industry computational biologist in a year" included a section on completing a meaningful computational biology project. After speaking with some readers who tried to follow that advice but got stuck, I realized the need for even more explicit instructions. So I created Figure One Lab (F1L), an initiative to help people build a compbio portfolio by re-enacting Figure 1 of biology papers. Check it out and let me know what you think! https://lnkd.in/eq9AUS-9
