15 years ago, I studied GIS, and back then, thinking about how GIS could profoundly impact our world felt more like a dream than a reality. But look where we are today! GIS is everywhere, seamlessly integrated into our lives, often in ways we don’t even notice. In construction, the potential for GIS is incredible. It’s time to think beyond the usual uses like pavement overlays or managing attributes. Imagine what could happen if we truly merged GIS with BIM (Building Information Modeling). Together, these tools could go beyond managing large-scale projects to detailing structures right down to bolts and joints. This kind of integration could completely transform the way we work—making construction smarter, faster, and more accurate. Back when I was working on my Master’s thesis, I used GIS / Multi Criteria Decision Making to find the best highway alignment alternatives. That experience was eye-opening. It taught me the value of thoughtful decision-making and effective data management—skills I still rely on every day in my work. For me, GIS isn’t just a tool. It’s a key to smarter solutions and innovative thinking.
