As Interparfums has located its offices in the beautiful building of 10 rue de Solferino, we bring to you today a piece of history on the profound legacy of the battle of Solferino. On June 24, 1859, Henry Dunant, a Swiss businessman, witnessed the atrocities of combat at the Battle of Solferino, between France (and its Italian ally) against Austria. The suffering he saw inspired him to dedicate his life helping people in conflict. Henry Dunant proposed a treaty requiring armies to treat all wounded soldiers and the creation of National Societies to support military medical services. Motivated to continue to support people affected by armed conflicts, he co-founded the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863 . For the ICRC, each anniversary of the Battle of Solferino is an opportunity to thank all those who are driven to act in response to human suffering. This weekend, thousands of members and volunteers gathered in Solferino, to march to Castiglione delle Stiviere (Lombardy, Italy) in a torchlight procession called "Fiaccolata". They followed the 8km taken by Henry Dunant and the local volunteer nurses during the Battle of Solferino, 165 years ago today. May this story of the Red Cross and Solferino continue to inspire us in #empathyforothers #helping #givingback #caring #peace

In World War I, 6% of the adult male population in the UK died as a result of the conflict. The resulting impact on families & communities, and the inter generational trauma is incomprehensible. Across World War I and World War II, over 90 million people were killed. The Soviet Union, China and Germany accounted for 51 million of these deaths. In both World Wars, British forces fought alongside their counterparts from India, the Caribbean, South Africa, Australia and other parts of the Commonwealth (these forces actually outnumbered British troops). It’s estimated that India alone provided around 1.5 million soldiers in World War 2. Since those two major conflicts, the UK has lost over 7,000 soldiers in conflict. Northern Ireland, Palestine and Afghanistan are amongst the deadliest conflicts in that period. “Never think that war, no matter how necessary nor how justified, is not a crime. Ask the infantry and ask the dead.” - Ernest Hemingway #remembrance #peace #lestweforget

🚨🇾🇪 US MADE A BIG MISTAKE BOMBING YEMEN If you think the new war in Yemen is going to be restricted to Yemen, think again. It's now open season for US and British military bases in the region. The Yemenis are fearless and have nothing to lose. They will easily set the entire region on fire. Do not underestimate their strike capacity far outside Yemen either, or their deeply embedded alliances with other groups. We have just heard reports of new attacks on US bases by Iraqi militias. Everyone knows that the major regional war will break out this year. It looks like it might now be entering the point of no return. All the defenders of justice, soldiers of righteousness and keepers of honor are Yemeni today. All the noble among mankind are with Yemen and the fate of all humanity is Yemeni. We see a people wage a war for no other reason than the defense of human dignity, without any profit motive whatsoever. History will remember heroic Yemen, who did what the other Arab leaders were too corrupt and cowardly to do, for all eternity.

Were it not totally unnecessary and superfluous to adduce arguments to prove what is conceded on all hands the Policy and expediency of resting the protection of the Country on a respectable and well established Militia, we might not only shew the propriety of the measure from our peculiar local situation, but we might have recourse to the Histories of Greece and Rome in their most virtuous and Patriotic ages to demonstrate the Utility of such Establishments. Then passing by the Mercinary Armies, which have at one time or another subverted the liberties of all-most all the Countries they have been raised to defend, we might see, with admiration, the Freedom and Independence of Switzerland supported for Centuries, in the midst of powerful and jealous neighbours, by means of a hardy and well organized Militia. We might also derive useful lessons of a similar kind from other Nations of Europe, but I believe it will be found, the People of this Continent are too well acquainted with the Merits of the subject to require information or example. I shall therefore proceed to point out some general outlines of their duty, and conclude this head with a few particular observations on the regulations which I conceive ought to be immediately adopted by the States at the instance and recommendation of Congress. - George Washington #Militia

US Memorial Day: Remembering Cost of War Memorial Day in the United States is traditionally a time to honor the men and women who have died in military service. However, it is crucial to use this day to acknowledge the broader and often overlooked consequences of war. We must amplify the voices that expose the true and complete cost of conflict, recommit to peace, and call for an end to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The United States has firmly backed Israel in its war against Palestinians. Ever since Israel's founding in 1948, the US has had a close relationship with the Jewish state. President Harry Truman was the first world leader to recognize its creation, and to this day Israel is a key US ally in the Middle East. Over the last nearly 75 years, the US government has provided more aid to Israel than it has to any other foreign country. Between 2001 and 2020, Israel received more military aid from the US than all other nations combined. https://lnkd.in/eQwM7vMn #humanity #humanrights #justice
