Dean and Professor | Empowering Individuals & Communities through Education | Building Collaborative Teams for Impact | Championing Equity & Belonging
The annual Leadership Institute, held this year on the joint campus of Cascadia College and the University of Washington, Bothell (in the northeast suburbs of Seattle), is now open for registration. This is a fantastic opportunity to build skills, foster community, mentor, and be mentored. See more details below, and visit https://lnkd.in/gchX5FJu for additional information. Our theme is “Out and Authentic.” Reflect on the ways you strive to be out and authentic, whether at work, in your community, or while navigating the job market. Our diverse, intersecting identities influence our experiences in all these spaces. This two-day leadership institute focuses on three main learning goals: 1. Building Self-Knowledge: Understanding how our identities shape our leadership choices and approaches. 2. Building Contextual Knowledge: Addressing current challenges and crises in higher education and the LGBTQ+ community. 3. Career Development: Offering networking opportunities, mentorship, and career planning. The institute includes a robust mentoring component. Participants can request a mentor or volunteer to be one upon registration. #LGBTQLeadership #HigherEducation #LeadershipInstitute #CareerDevelopment #Mentorship #CommunityBuilding #OutAndAuthentic #ProfessionalGrowth #DiversityAndInclusion #LGBTQCommunity

Self-awareness is key to empowering yourself in your workplace. Recognizing and understanding your unique personality, actions, values, beliefs, emotions, and thoughts can differentiate you from others in the jungle. In my books “Pride Leadership” and “Your Queer Career(R)” we call this having a “Drone Perspective” on what’s going on in your leadership world. On a scale of 1-10 with 1 = “not aware” and 10 = “extremely self-aware” … where are you with regard to your leadership self-awareness? #lgbtqa #diversity #inclusion #thegayleadershipdude #leadership

🚨Thursday Thoughts🚨 From the Desk of All of us Together Co.: Our team of equity experts define privilege as when something is not viewed as problematic to a person because it does not directly impact them personally. 👋🏾👋🏽👋🏻 Hold on, hear us out. Contrary to popular belief, privilege rarely has anything to do with what one has been through. Instead, privilege is better defined as what one has not had to endure based off any one or set of privileges. An example of privilege would be members on our team who do not have any ability-related need. These team members have never had to walk into a bookstore and worry about whether or not their book of choice was offered in braille. This is an example of ability privilege. While many people most often default to race and ethnicity to discuss the concept and process by which privilege onsets, other forms of privilege include: religious-privilege, age-privilege, gender-privilege, etc. It is important that we all understand what privileges we have and in what circumstances we have them. Because, in order to be our most inclusive selves, we must have a healthy foundation of self awareness. For more information on privilege, visit us on the web under our courses tab. You may book our, "Understanding Privilege" course. #Privilege #Privileged #WhitePrivilege #RacialPrivilege #GeographicalPrivilege #GenderPrivilege #DiversityandInclusion #Equality #Equity #Respect #Kindness #BeKind #BiasTraining #Diversity #Workplace #WorkplaceResilience #CriticalRaceTheory #AntiRacism #AntiRacist #Racism #Diversity #HR #HumanRelations #HumanResources #Gender #Religion #ThoughtLeaders #ThoughtLeadership #ThoughtfulLeadership #Corporate #PublicRelations ALT TEXT: A color digital graphic featuring five (5) rows of typewritten text positioned horizontally inside a circle. Perhaps if we take a creative approach in our DEI transformational work that allows for an experience of the senses, an infusion of creativity and a generative space that will allow the various ingredients in the learning to mix, mingle and intersperse, we may discover that the missing element we were looking for - the catalyst for change- lives in the folds of your body........Read the full interactive essay on my Substack. #healing #healingarts #transformation #indigenous #indigenouswisdom #ancestors #spiritualjourney #spiritualarts #wellnessindustry #commitment #cultivation #dharma #wellness #preservation #dei #deib #implementation #belonging #inclusion #knowledge #learning #professionaldevelopment #community #rest #grief #equity #diversity #decolonization #paradox

How do you handle praise? I'll be honest . . . I get awkward. It feels uncomfortable to talk about my accomplishments or awards. But Carmen Morin taught me a great lesson: My platform is less about me and more about the people who look like me and think 'If he can do it, I can do it.' Let me know your thoughts below! #businesstips #entrepreneurlife #awards #inclusion

What do you get when you cross a gorilla with a parrot? I don’t know, but when it talks, you listen! So often, I hear in the inclusion work I do that it’s the loud voices that succeed (which are often white straight neurotypical cis men without disabilities). This is not inclusion. Not only does it often exclude those in the out-group, but it can also exclude introverts, which obviously includes men. If we want to create inclusive cultures, we need to rethink the way we work - meetings, brainstorms, promotion processes… Everything. In the meantime, remember to listen to the quietest person in the room. They are often the ones with the smartest thing to say. #DadJokes #Inclusion #Unlearn #Introverts #MicroBallroom

“Bring your whole self to work” I’ve heard this phrase a few times and, as is my way, it’s been processing in the back of my mind. On the surface level it’s a great ideal, a positive phrase that encourages inclusion and equality. Everyone should be able to be themselves at work. Thinking about it deeper, what does it really mean though and how do we achieve it? Can we truly achieve it as a society? As an Autistic person in policing, as part of the leadership team, I absolutely have to be careful about what parts of myself I bring to work. I can’t always just be myself as other people aren’t ready for it. So it’s not about me bringing my whole self to work, it’s about the work environment accepting me doing that. It’s no good in me being my direct honest self, if other people will try to apply social standards I have no interest in needlessly following. There also needs to be balance, as with most things. I swear a lot at home, it’s a natural part of my vocabulary. I don’t think that part of my true self would be appreciated in a partnership meeting 🤔 Just some thoughts and the phrase will mean different things for different people. #inclusion #neurodiversity #equality #neurodivergence #justathought
