Last night I signed up for the free trial of Ad-free ITVX and binged on the full series of Alan Bates vs The Post Office. The sheer scale of destruction caused by an institution that felt like visiting your cuddly Nana, who always brings out the good biscuits, is near impossible to fathom. But the aftermath of the airing of the TV show is truly unprecedented and thoroughly deserved. After 20 years of slow and hard campaigning, and just one week of telly, the story is catapulted into the mainstream. Over 4.2 million tuned in to the first broadcast, and now thanks to streaming, more than 9.2 million of us are all ears (with the nmumber still growing) Kevin Lygo, managing director of media and entertainment at ITV, said: "The unwavering success of Mr. Bates vs The Post Office demonstrates the undeniable power of TV, particularly public service broadcasting." This wonderful piece of TV captivated a nation who shouted for justice and the result: OBE's lost, wrongful criminal convictions overturned, and proper compensation for those forgotten. Well done, ITV. The power of good TV in action. This is actually what I said would happen years ago... ...Like Stan Lee said... "People don't really want change...you can't sell real change...they want the illusion of change..." That's true... And I mean, the bundling of the streaming services is a savvy business move...after all, do you really want to compete with your professional friends and industry colleagues...when you don't have to (...!?...) It doesn't make sense to compete in that way...better to split the cost and come to a gentleman's agreement on whom-gets-what-when versus spending money where you simply don't need to... This industry (and particularly the studios) has always been interdependent (remember, we are all making different versions of the same product...); and so as much as we compete with each other in this industry... The competing entities want (and need) each other to survive... Because it's not an industry if there's only one player... #cometogether
In the late 1990s, NBC’s “ER” would attract more than 30 million viewers a week and came close to commanding a 40 share — meaning that 40% of people watching TV in that hour were tuned in to the Warner Bros. Television series. Today, such an accomplishment is beyond the reach of any TV program short of the Super Bowl. Viewers now watch TV in very different ways than they did 25 years ago, and streaming has ushered in an era of television. But as advertisers, executives and talent head to New York’s annual network upfronts presentations this week, they’re encountering something unexpected: The streamers that had been quick to destroy the old network TV formula are now looking to emulate it.
