PCS - Port Community Systems is a multi-user system for automatic data exchange between shipping lines and port services in order to speed up the registration of arrival, parking, departure of ships, as well as customs clearance of goods. On April 25, 2024, IMO published Guidelines on port community systems FAL.5/Circ.54. Which presents the basic principles for the harmonization, standardization and interoperability of various private and public commercial and maritime information exchange systems, including the "single window" environment, as I wrote earlier. It will be useful for those who are "Onshore" and who are interested in how the port works. I also attach supporting publications from open sources to the guide. Sending your goods by sea freight? At M&S Boxes and Packaging, when using our packing services, we will secure the goods into the shipping case (this may include bearers, lashing and case lining, or even protection from rust and corrosion), and we can do the same when loading and packing out a container to avoid movement/damage in transport. A lot of things are considered when sending valued goods overseas, and that doesn't stop when your goods leave us! This video shows how containers are loaded onto the ship at the docks 🚢

It's Eurosatory time again. Meaning your feed is about to become littered with posts about which stands to visit (TDA) and who has the best coffee (TDA). GDIS always attends and this time we want to talk about something not many people do. No, not why the 1980s Airwick Magic Mushroom song lives rent free in our heads (Google it). Rather, about ‘Strategic Second Sources’. Most people go to trade shows trying to land those Big Fish. Go for it! Someone has to win those contracts. But these have long lead times. And there are other ways to be successful, specifically at Eurosatory. For example, have you considered that, in order to deliver that Very Large New Contract, the huge ship/aircraft/UAV builder has a cache of existing work they must also still deliver? How likely do you think it is they’ll bring on you, an untested international supplier, to meet their Very Large New Contract? They’re more likely to graduate proven, existing suppliers to meet complex packets of new work. That leaves behind a capability vacuum for their existing scheduled work. Therefore, the question you should be asking at Eurosatory this week is ‘how can I take pressure off your existing supply chain’? This does two things: 🧲It shows you’re thinking about your customer’s pain points 🧲It means you can use your capability to their immediate advantage Why don’t more people ask these two questions at trade shows? And why DOES the Magic Mushroom guy have air fresheners in every room of his house? Is he hiding bodies? These are the questions keeping us up at night. Here’s another example of how you can become a Strategic Second Source. Say you’re an electronics manufacturer with spare capacity. You have two approaches at Eurosatory: 🦝Sell more product(s) into new markets to increase manufacturing demand, meaning you may also need export controls, in-country certifications, and more. OR 🦝Partner with in-country suppliers who’ve already cleared those hurdles and help them. Again, still chase those big contracts. But also think about becoming a Strategic Second Source to companies needing to backfill gaps in their existing supply chain. Also, this week, say hi to Evan Read and Thomas M Smith at Eurosatory on/near the TDA stand this week.
