The impact of friendship and community cannot be overstated. Community is fundamental. It is the key to negotiating perilous times through support and shared experiences. With a strong community, anything is possible. When doubts arise, as they inevitably do, a community can provide an invaluable sounding board of encouragement and reality checks. And when our own internal beliefs aren’t up to the task, we can borrow the beliefs we have in each other to keep us moving forward. And let’s be honest, having a group of people you can relate to and who get what you’re going through is just nice. Physicians are entrenched in community throughout our training, but the camaraderie all but disappears as we reach attendinghood. Community may just be one of the most significant missing pieces for physicians in modern-day medicine that drives physician burnout, overwhelm, and overall discontent. Who is your community? You can't look after anyone else if you don't look after yourself. ✔️ Remember self-care isn't selfish ✔️ Build your support network ✔️ Don't be hard on yourself Easier said than done - right? You've got work, school, medical appointments, and other family members to look after. It's a lot! The biggest tip we can give you as a parent, is to try and schedule some 'you time' each week. Whether it's 10-15 mins each morning, or 1 hour once a week - you need time to refresh and re-energise so you can function at your best. Do you make time for yourself each week? The Power of Listening and not Judging Today, I want to share a valuable lesson that underscores the importance of truly listening to our patients. Recently, I had an encounter that left a lasting impression on me. I was knocking on a patient’s door, and instead, the door across the hall opened. A gentleman stepped out, looking visibly irritated, and asked, “Are you looking for me?” After confirming his name and apartment number, I realized he was indeed my patient and entered his home. He seemed upset and frustrated, and initially, I worried that perhaps I had done something wrong. But instead of jumping to conclusions, I chose to take a step back and listen to him. As our conversation unfolded, I discovered that his agitation wasn't directed at me or the care he was receiving—it was because he was dealing with severe constipation, causing him significant discomfort. This simple act of listening and maintaining an open mind led to a straightforward solution that relieved his distress. This experience was a powerful reminder of the critical role empathy and patience play in healthcare. By truly listening, we can uncover the root causes of our patients' concerns and provide more effective and compassionate care. Always keep an open mind. The next time a patient seems upset, remember: it might not be about you. you know therapy is harmful to you when... 1. The therapist is working out of their scope of practise. We need to have valid academic transcripts to practice anything. 2. When they start giving you advice. We simply don't do that. Advising is not our job. 3. When they compel the clients/patients to disclose things before they are comfortable sharing. Some sessions are uncomfortable but we don't compel. 4. When they ask for promoting their services from their clients. Our relationship is one to one not one to many. 5. When they promote their competence without relevant qualification or certification. Please don't trust ads. 6. When you start hearing other clients' stories in your sessions. I mean where is the limit to confidentiality? 7. When you hear the "I discussed your case with..." statement from the therapist without taking your consent before disclosing your information. There is "informed consent" for literally anything. 8. When you observe that the therapist themself is reacting to your information frequently instead of stopping and responding to you. We all have our triggers but therapists can manage them well. however if your therapist is unable to manage them, then probably they are not the right ones to discuss issues with. #therapy #redflages #therapeuticrelationship #therapygoals #client #health #growth
