Walking into a patient's room to find them in extreme pain and upset can be a daunting experience. But what do you do when you need to have a conversation with them about quitting a dangerous behavior that is literally making them "feel better" but is killing them? As a healthcare professional, I've learned to stop and ask myself a crucial question in these situations: "Where was I in the story?" By understanding where the patient is coming from and what is currently uncomfortable for them, I can relate my message in a way that makes them feel comfortable. This approach has allowed me to insert myself into their life story in a positive and helpful manner, which has helped save lives. It's a powerful reminder that sometimes, the most effective way to help someone is to understand their story and figure out how to insert yourself into it. You may be surprised at just how effective this approach can be. #nevertoolate #nevergiveup #hospitals #UCHealth #smokingcessation #vapingcessation #reduceharm #education #support

What if the patient doesn’t want your opinions or your entry into their life? What if the patient is using opioids to help them function with life-long disabling pain and can’t move. without them? Why would you think that is harmful? Harmful is lack of pain medicine which may likely perpetuate their decline. And, what about withdrawal? Cold turkey? Very dangerous place that puts the patient in. It is very harmful to interject bias. The patient should make the choice in treatment.. It is only our job to inform them of the potential of side effects, allergic reactions, and long term effects. Long term use of opioids is of course used in life long pain. Richard lawhern on Linked in is a long time researcher in pain treatment. Harmful politically driven propaganda has caused so much absolute devastation for patients who suffer. Know the latest facts. Do we suffer the consequences of the patients actions? No we go out walking without pain and with a smile, and a “bravo to me” attitude as if to feed our ego.
