As CEO, I am constantly reminded of the importance of using my platform to champion the values that lie at the heart of Beiersdorf. Recently, we were honored to welcome Dan Unger, the great-grandson of our first CEO, Dr. Willy Jacobsohn. Dan's connection to Beiersdorf is deeply meaningful, especially as he shared the stories about his great-grand father in the time of a right-wing regime and how important it is to take a stance. Dan's visit, including a moving "Fireplace Chat" with our employees, served as a poignant reminder of the importance of upholding our values, even in the face of adversity. Courage is not just a word at Beiersdorf; it's a legacy woven into our DNA. At Beiersdorf, we are immensely proud of our European heritage. This pride goes beyond words; it compels us to actively uphold the values of democracy, peaceful coexistence, and economic stability. We believe that each of us has a role to play in safeguarding these ideals. I encourage all of you to find your voice and use it. So, EssilorLuxottica’s key social and environmental impact lies in … its key role as the global leader in eyewear and vision care, serving over 700 million customers across 150 countries. Through a broad range of products and innovative solutions, EssilorLuxottica improves eye health and enhances the quality of life, fostering productivity, societal inclusion, and self-expression. However, the company’s market dominance has raised concerns. Despite offering relatively affordable prescription glasses, EssilorLuxottica’s near-monopoly has enabled it to control prices, limit competition, and restrict customer access to discounts. Environmentally, the company emits over 4.1 million tonnes of CO2 annually and consumes large quantities of water, with a significant portion sourced from water-stressed regions. Although it recycles 57% of its waste, the disposal of end-of-life products remains an ongoing environmental challenge. EssilorLuxottica’s overall impact score of +0.94, reflects a balance between its positive contributions to vision care and innovation, alongside the challenges associated with market control and environmental impact. We were pleased to welcome Diana Battaggia, Head of UNIDO ITPO Italy, as guest speaker at Phygital Sustainability EXPO®️. During her speech, she presented a project supported by the Italian government to enhance Iraqi fashion led by women, combining tradition and sustainable innovation, with the participation of designers and artisans of the Iraqi House of Fashion. The 5th edition of Phygital Sustainability EXPO®️, held at the spectacular Museum of the Imperial Forum (113 AD) in Rome, is the international flagship event event on the sustainable transition and on dissemination of the culture of sustainability to consumers, students and stakeholders.
