What is a re-excision? If the pathology report – which comes back up to 10 days after surgery – shows that the margins of the tumor contain cancer cells, patients must be called back for another surgery, or re-excision. Even with skilled surgeons, the odds of a repeat surgery due to cancer left behind are high, ranging from 10%-50% for breast cancer. Additional surgeries not only cause emotional stress and anxiety, but they can more than double the risk of complications for patients and delay adjuvant treatments. #breastcancerawareness #breastcancer

Research Highlight: 90 women with gynecologic cancers who were planned to undergo laparotomy surgery were randomized to receive either 120 ml of Cassia alata Linn infusion on the morning after surgery or 120 ml of warm water on the morning after surgery. The Cassia alata Linn treatment group experienced speed gastrointestinal function recovery after surgery than placebo group. Obeying principles of surgery and staying in plane defines colorectal oncological surgery. Since the discovery of Heald's Holy Plane, TME has led to a significant reduction in local recurrences for rectal cancer, to a point where local outcomes after rectal surgery has well surpassed that of colonic surgery. With the advent of Radiotherapy, and more recently, Total Neoadjuvant Treatment, the planes during surgery has invariably made surgery slightly more complicated with fibrosis and oedema making surgical planes less well-defined. There has been much worry about TNT-RAPIDO/PRODIGE resulting in significant surgical difficult, thus we embarked on a blinded test to evaluate surgical difficulty amongst colorectal cancer surgeons familiar with TME. The results suggest that such worries, while important to consider, may actually not truly reflect what we encounter in reality (reassuringly!).
