Gender inequality is not a women's issue - it's a human rights issue. This International Women's Day, men, it's time to speak up. Share your stories about how you invest in women. Don't let the fear of saying or doing the wrong thing hold you back. The more you advocate for women, the more you learn to do and say things better. If you're not ready to say something, start by questioning the status quo and examining longstanding practices that perpetuate systemic inequities. Then, have the courage to change those practices, including handing the keys to women. Remember, this is not a zero-sum game. Empower Women Equally As I looked down at my surroundings, I was reminded of the countless women whose lives are shaped by policies. Their stories, struggles, and successes are at the heart of what we strive to achieve in gender equality and empowerment worldwide. Women empowerment is not just a goal, it is necessary for sustainable development and equitable growth. As we continue to advocate for and implement policies, it is crucial to ask ourselves some key questions: 1. How do our policies actively promote women's participation in leadership roles across all sectors? 2. Are we addressing the unique challenges faced by women in rural and underserved communities through our policy frameworks? 3. What mechanisms are in place to ensure that women's voices are included and valued in the policymaking process at all levels? 4. How are we measuring the impact of our policies on women's economic empowerment and financial inclusion and independence? 5. What steps are we taking to eliminate systemic barriers and biases that hinder women's progress in their professional and personal lives? We can identify gaps, refine our strategies, and drive meaningful change by reflecting on these questions. Empowering women creates opportunities and ensures all women have equal access support, resources, and an enabling environment to thrive. International Women’s Day, is for Women and also Men! The 2024 theme for this year International Women’s Day is, “Invest in women: Accelerate Progress” ‘This theme emphasises the critical role of investing in women's education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and leadership development to accelerate progress towards gender equality. By investing in women, we not only enhance their individual opportunities and livelihoods but also drive positive social and economic outcomes for communities and nations.’ The above is well known and what we continue to strive for as it speaks to SDG10. When we educate and empower a woman we do so for the whole community! We need to also remember that men have a role to play. They can become allies in the fight for gender equality. Men can help dismantle oppressive systems and create space for women to thrive. It's essential for men to listen to women's experiences, amplify their voices, and actively work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society.
