Hey everyone! Determining artificial lift options in mid to late-life unconventional wells is paramount to the economic success of hydrocarbon recovery. Come listen as we compare two different artificial lift methodologies (HPGL & ESP) in wells in the same formations. Key comparisons of economics (CAPEX/OPEX), operational limitation, and ultimate hydrocarbon recovery between the two lift methodologies will be presented. Paper presented by: P. Dalamarinis, S. I am pleased to announce that my article, "Recent Technological Advancements in Horizontal Well Drilling and Productivity Optimization", has been translated to Spanish and published in the latest edition of Energy Journal "Petrorenova," (June 2024, vol. 10, issue10) Short summary in English: Recent technological advancements in the petroleum sector have significantly improved the drilling of horizontal wells, enhancing reservoir exposure and increasing the productivity index of oil producers. The integration of inflow control devices (ICDs) along the horizontal well trajectory has been pivotal in achieving flow pressure equalization at the bottom of the well. This ensures efficient oil production from both high-permeability and narrower sections of the reservoir. The strategic use of ICDs not only delays the intrusion of unwanted fluids but also optimizes oil sweep efficiency, thereby improving overall production outcomes. This article discusses the implications of these advancements, providing insights into their operational benefits and potential for future applications in the industry.

Digital oil field DOF system is mainly focused on wells, production, and operations but now expanding into field decisions and management. The integration of the production systems’ models with the reservoir models is growing in order to optimize production and recovery. Digital oil fields integrate technology, information, people, and processes to maximize asset performance and value across the oil and gas production life cycle. The purpose of digital or smart oilfields solutions is straightforward which are to optimize production, improve operational efficiency and to increase productivity through integrated workforce. This paper represents an introduction to digital oil field. by Paul A. Adekunte | Matthew N. O. Sadiku | Janet O. 🔬This week's research spotlight: Reservoir Engineering and Enhanced Oil Recovery 🗒️Project Overview: The project, led by FES PI Dr. Hassan Dehghanpour, focuses on Reservoir Engineering and Enhanced Oil Recovery. Addressing industry challenges like greenhouse gas emissions and a lack of understanding in in-situ recovery mechanisms, the project investigates the fate of injected solvents (CO2 and lean gas). Utilizing a state-of-the-art laboratory system, the team aims to characterize and visualize solvent-oil-rock interactions under reservoir conditions. 💡 Key Objectives: ✨ Dive into solvent injection into mature oil reservoirs to enhance oil recovery and conserve energy resources. ✨ Uncover the intricacies of solvent-oil-rock interactions for a comprehensive understanding of in-situ recovery mechanisms. 🏭Lab to Field Transition: After evaluating the concept at the laboratory scale, the team plans to collaborate with industrial partners for a pilot test, with the expectation that the results will pave the way for optimizing in-situ recovery techniques through strategic solvent injections. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗮𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗿𝘀 Characteristics of Gas Reservoirs Gas reservoirs are underground formations that contain natural gas, a crucial energy source and raw material for various industries. Understanding the characteristics of gas reservoirs is essential for efficient exploration, production, and management. Here are the key features: Types of Gas Reservoirs 1. **Conventional Gas Reservoirs**: These reservoirs have good porosity and permeability, allowing gas to flow easily to the production wells. 2. **Unconventional Gas Reservoirs**: These include tight gas, shale gas, and coalbed methane, which require advanced extraction techniques due to low permeability. Key Properties 1. **Porosity**: The percentage of the reservoir rock's volume that is made up of pore spaces, crucial for storing gas. 2. **Permeability**: The ability of the rock to transmit gas. High permeability means easier gas flow, while low permeability requires enhanced recovery techniques. 3. **Pressure and Temperature**: Reservoir pressure and temperature affect the phase behavior of gas and the methods used for extraction and processing. 4. **Gas Composition**: Natural gas primarily consists of methane but can include other hydrocarbons and impurities like carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, which influence processing and usage. Reservoir Drive Mechanisms 1. **Depletion Drive**: Pressure drops as gas is produced, and the main energy comes from the gas expansion. 2. **Water Drive**: Water ingress maintains pressure but can complicate gas recovery. 3. **Combination Drive**: Both depletion and water drives contribute to reservoir pressure maintenance. Production and Recovery 1. **Primary Recovery**: Natural flow of gas to the surface due to reservoir pressure. 2. **Enhanced Recovery Techniques**: Techniques such as hydraulic fracturing and acidizing are used to improve gas flow in low-permeability reservoirs. Challenges 1. **Reservoir Heterogeneity**: Variations in rock properties can complicate gas extraction. 2. **Pressure Maintenance**: Managing reservoir pressure to optimize recovery while avoiding water ingress or formation damage. 3. **Environmental Concerns**: Methane emissions, groundwater contamination, and land use issues require careful management and regulatory compliance.
