Join Us at UPMADE IN EE NYCxDESIGN - our exploration of Estonia’s design contributions to sustainability unfolds in 4 engaging sections: Tradition & Craftsmanship • Upcycling • Recycling • Biomaterials. RECYCLING Delve into the groundbreaking world of Estonian recycling, where waste is not an end, but a new beginning. This section delves into the innovative processes that transform waste into valuable materials, underpinning a design ecosystem focused on regeneration and sustainability. Estonian design advocates for the principle that a product’s end-of-life is as critical as its inception, with a growing emphasis on designing for disassembly. This ensures products can be effortlessly dismantled for recycling, reducing waste. At the forefront of sustainable material development, Estonian researchers and designers are pioneering smart packaging solutions and other materials that are easier to recycle, significantly lowering the environmental impact and leading the charge in ecological design solutions. MEET THE DESIGNER Anne-Liis Leht / HYTI Two qualities give the ZEN soap dish meaning – material and function. Crystal clear soda-lime glass, which until now has not been reprocessed or recycled in Estonia, can now be put back into circulation in the form of soap holders. There is a choice of colorless or colored soap holders – the former are made from onetime awards, souvenirs and gifts, while the latter are made from HYTI studio production leftovers. #upmadeinEE #NYCxDESIGN #estoniandesignhouse #upmadeinESTONIA #estoniancultureabroad #estoniandesign #recycling #hytidesign #anneliisleht

Estonian design advocates for the principle that a product’s end-of-life is as critical as its inception, with a growing emphasis on designing for disassembly. At the forefront of sustainable material development, Estonian researchers and designers are pioneering smart packaging solutions and other materials that are easier to recycle, significantly lowering the environmental impact and leading the charge in ecological design solutions. 🟠 MEET THE DESIGNER: Argo Tamm / Sustainable Design and Material Lab DiMa In this process, mechanically shredded textile fibers have been mixed with a binder, after which the carded material is developed into a composite with different properties of thickness and strength by using the pressing method. We aim to highlight its sensory tactile properties, transparency in the material used, and the fact that the novel material is recyclable. The design draws attention to the possibilities of applying non-woven materials made from recycled textiles in the context of industrial design. The created product is a minimal bench. The strength of the chair is based on the vertical panels. In order to create contrast and demonstrate its compatibility with other natural materials, the upper detail is left undefined. It is changeable and playful - just like the material underneath. 🚀 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗺 🌍 Over the past three days, we had the pleasure of attending the General Assembly Meeting of SOLSTICE in beautiful Amsterdam. A heartfelt thank you to Circle Economy for hosting us with such warmth and great organization! 🙌 We left with valuable findings from our discussions and analyses, ready to integrate them into our pilot concepts: 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Berlin has enough good-condition textiles. By improving distribution and swapping systems, we can reduce unnecessary new purchases, avoid textile waste and extend clothing lifespans. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: Physical communities play a key role in shaping habits. We seek collaborations with #AGainGuide stakeholders and neighborhood hubs to foster textile sharing and care. 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿: Repair is essential for damaged items but often costs more than buying new, making it an unviable business model. We’re exploring a repair bonus system to make repairs more affordable and sustainable. 💡 Inspired by the United Repair Centre, we see potential in involving fashion brands to promote repair-friendly designs and accessible services. We’re now moving into the next phase of designing impactful pilot projects — and we’d love to hear your thoughts! Fill in our survey and share your ideas: 🔄 Swapping & Community Building: How can a clothing swap and sharing location be both socially and economically sustainable? Which locations are best suited for clothing swaps or shared wardrobes? 🔧 Repair Bonus: How can we ensure this is financially attractive as well as fair and justice for users, repair services, and brands? How can Berlin’s repair sector prepare for the upcoming Right to Repair (2026) and what’s needed to make it beneficial for our local repair ecosystem? Let’s work together to create a more circular and sustainable future for textiles! Please support us with your insights and opinions in our current survey 👉 https://lnkd.in/dbG8ASSH (English) and https://lnkd.in/dQVumrNw (German) 💚 And please share this survey also with your friends and wider network. Thank you! #Berlin #CircularBerlin #CircularEconomy #CircularCity #Sustainability #Sustainabletextiles #Sustainablefashion

We drove to napier for a product launch… and what happened next had us in stitches! 😂🌊 SOUND ON That said, we're stoked to introduce an upcoming product launch dropping this Friday! I won't give too much detail but it's crafted from Critical. Cleanstone - 100% recycled soft plastics and fishing nets and it’s a kaupapa close to our hearts, blending toi Māori with modern innovation to help create a better future for te taiao (our natural world) and our granchildren. 🌊 And here's why this launch matters: 🌱 It's where sustainability meet storytelling: This kaupapa will be helping to combat the 8 million tonnes of plastic that end up in the ocean each year (UNEP). 🔨 Versatility in Design: I'm excited because this kaupapa showcases that Cleanstone is not only durable but a dream to work with—cut, carve, and finish it like timber while ensuring it lasts for generations. This Friday, we'll be dropping this launch through Konei (Konei.nz) so stay tuned for upcoming content! Ngā mihi nui to our partners here Te Ara Hihiko, Scott Architects, Matua Jacob Scott, Jason Kendrick, Manawa Udy, Ngahere Communities and Konei - we're honoured to be working on this kaupapa with you all. Stay tuned for more up coming content about this launch. 💬 I run a green materials company called Critical., and we help designers and brands create spaces that inspire and care for our planet using 100% recycled plastic panels called Cleanstone. Hit me up at criticaldesign.nz or DM me if you’re keen to collaborate! #SustainableDesign #CircularEconomy #Whakairo #RecycledMaterials #MāoriDesign #InteriorDesign #Cleanstone #GreenBuilding #CulturalInnovation #DesignForChange #EcoFriendlyMaterials #FutureOfDesign
