We are delighted to welcome our summer interns to etasca. Throughout the Summer they will help develop our models, further our thought leadership and work on client-facing projects in various areas of energy and chemicals. We asked them for their insight into what challenges lie ahead for the industry. Gordon WS Yong is a chemical engineering graduate joining our team last week. “I find the challenge of decarbonising the aviation industry compelling. Aviation is responsible for approximately 800 million tons of CO2 per year, contributing to 2.5% of global CO2 emissions. Decarbonising aviation is particularly challenging due to aircraft designs optimised for energy-dense fossil kerosene, the low turnover of the aviation fleet and the existing infrastructure tailored to conventional fuel. Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is an alternative fuel made from non-petroleum feedstocks that reduces emissions from air transport. It can be used interchangeably with conventional jet fuel, with current technology supporting up to a 50% blend without significant modifications to existing systems. Despite the need for more diverse production methods, Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) dominate, making up about 85% of global SAF capacity. Meanwhile, e-SAF is gaining momentum with advancements in power-to-liquid technology. SAF can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuels but it comes at a cost. SAF can cost up to 700% more than fossil fuels creating a significant challenge. Scaling up production to meet future demand is estimated to require $1.45 trillion over the next 30 years. Despite this, the future of SAF looks promising. Over 60 airlines have pledged to use 10% SAF by 2030, and increasing government mandates globally, along with initiatives like the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), are promoting SAF adoption and carbon offsetting. etasca has been working on numerous SAF projects and I look forward to supporting them and their clients. In Europe and Eurasia, women are underrepresented in the energy industry. With support from USAID, in 2023 NARUC launched the Women in Energy Internship Program to facilitate women’s participation in the energy sector of Europe and Eurasia. The program aims to foster young women’s interest in the field through paid internships designed for recent graduates with degrees relevant to energy regulation, and helps interns gain professional skills that would enable them to enter careers in the energy sector. The first cohort of interns was placed at სემეკი / საქართველოს ენერგეტიკისა და წყალმომარაგების მარეგულირებელი კომისია / GNERC and the National Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission of Ukraine, and the program is now looking to expand to include additional countries and their respective regulatory commissions. This summer, Master of Environmental Studies student Shrey Mehta served as the Kleinman Birol Fellow at the International Energy Agency (IEA). He worked as part of the Gas, Coal, and Power Markets Division under the Electricity Markets and Security Directorate. During his internship, Shrey played a key role as one of the main authors of the "Electricity Mid-Year Update July 2024" report. Focus deeper, connect broader, learn progressively stronger… I started my internship at HKG Energy right after my 6-month burn out without realizing it. Instead of completely spending time relaxing and healing, I chose to try something completely different from what I have done before… INTERN AT A CLIMATE-TECH START-UP!! For the last 6 months, I used to do a lot of different kinds of tasks, from attending competitions to doing science research besides my schoolwork. Completely different from my previous high intensity daily workload, in the first week at HKG Energy, the only thing I have done is READING. I read a lot and a lot, from company documents to market-relevant articles. It seems to be a simple task, but it cannot be harder for a dynamic person like me. For the whole first week, I struggled with maintaining the reading flow and connecting loads of information; however, the things I have received are more than that. Set goals, be ambitious, be patient, be goal-driven and trust the process. Take time and hard work will pay it off. The title of this post is also my key messages in the first week. I have set personal goals for this 3-month internship, and I am determined to complete it. Thank you HKGE for giving me the opportunity to push myself to the infinity and beyond!! Surely, in the next 3 months, I will prove myself to be a deserving candidate for this position. 🔥🔥🔥

That's a wrap for this summer's Intern/E&P Connection Mixer events! We are prepping to bring back out Topic Series Events!! Here are a few key takeaways from this summer: - Bright Future: We met many bright young students ready to take on challenges, tackle fieldwork, solve problems, and wear many hats as they enter the workforce. - Company Presence: Companies should reevaluate their presence at schools. Focus on what's impactful, build relationships with schools and students, and provide more opportunities for industry exposure. - University Visits: Don't just settle for an hour-long company advertisement. Offer more substance and discussions that highlight the industry and various career paths. - Connecting with Interns: Our industry needs to improve efforts in connecting with the next generation and making them feel welcome. Even interns can feel isolated, and we need to address that. - Dinner Discussions: The dinners in Houston and OKC were the highlights. Extending our events to include dinner with interns allowed us to share invaluable stories, insights, and takeaways. Hello connections! I am pleased to share that I have successfully completed my six-month internship at the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology. During this period, I delved into the field of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies, contributing to finding feasible pathways for the decarbonization of Singapore’s power generation sector. My main objectives were to: a. Understand the various CCUS technologies in depth and identify the most implementable technologies in the context of Singapore. b. Search for research papers with relevant inventory data for conducting Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Techno-economic Assessment (TEA) for the identified CCUS technologies. c. Summarize this data into databases that can be used to calculate the environmental and economic indicators for the CCUS technologies. I also had the opportunity to work on a project related to agricultural farms, which helped me expand my understanding of conducting LCA and TEA and apply my knowledge in a different sector. Throughout my internship, I worked under the guidance of senior researchers and professionals, and collaborated with other interns. These interactions were crucial in improving my teamwork and communication skills. I would like to express my gratitude to my mentors Eugene Kok, Ginny Yinjin Lee 李宜璟, and Soo Lin Goh 吴素琳 for their guidance, openness to my questions and points of view, and for promoting healthy discussions.

The Task Force published last month a 3 page Management Summary and Call to Action addressed at companies on all scales employing geoscientists in the energy sector and beyond. This was derived from the 2023 Task Force report 'Geoscience Skills in Crisis; energy sector perspectives and energy transition implications'. We also published a document to make it easier for companies and staff to offer internships, to undertake individual or corporate outreach and we also included details of existing mentoring schemes to enable staff to be mentored or to act as mentor. Thrilled to Announce the Completion of My Summer Internship at STEG! I’m excited to share that I have successfully completed my summer initiation internship with STEG (Société Tunisienne de l'Électricité et du Gaz), where I gained invaluable hands-on experience in Power systems, High voltage system maintenance and the Electrical network. This journey gave me a deeper understanding of real-world engineering thought-process, applications and the challenges and solutions that shape the energy sector. During this internship, I had the opportunity to: ·        Understanding the fundamentals of Electricity distribution and the abstract concepts of AC power lines and high voltage transformers. ·        Work closely with experienced professionals on key projects: photovoltaic electronics and refining solar energy. ·        Enhance my technical skills in problem solving and work experience. ·        Contribute to maintain the electrical network.
