Is the transition to EV in richer countries causing a surge in export of used fossil fuel cars to lower income countries, therefore shifting emissions and slowing down clean transport transition in developing economies? Will there be less export of used EVs to lower income countries because the richer countries want to keep the critical minerals in them? Andreas Kopf presented a very interesting research by ITF on the global trade of used EVs at #ITF24. If the governments and civil society do not intervene, the future of used EV trade will simply follow market mechanisms. I suppose it will then have everything to do with battery chemistry evolution and the critical minerals market. Both are highly dynamic. What we can be sure already, is that lower income countries need (and want to) build recycling and waste management capacity; and both export and import countries need to get a better hold of second hand trade. https://lnkd.in/eR6azH5k

Hydrogen as fuel? so many unanswered question. Where is H2 produced from? Steam reforming of fossil fuels? its cheap but lots of COx biproducts will be generated. Electrolysis of water? electrolysis of water does not give H2 and Oxygen, this is misinformation. Remember the movie #3idiots, salty water conducts electricity... yeah, electrolysis of only salty water can be conducted and the biproducts of this are chlorine and caustic lye. How will we handle the huge scales of chlorine? Additionally these engines after consuming H2 will produce water as emission. Water vapour is the worst green house gas. Recollect that in high humidity situation heat index is the highest. Plus if every car runs on H2, how will it affect the rainfall patterns? Ammonia instead of H2… arent NOx emmision more toxic than COx I am personally very skeptical about H2 as fuel.
