Are vasomotor (VSM) symptoms merely an annoying right of passage for women in Menopause, or are they implicated in poor health outcomes as well? On April 25th, join Dr. Lauren Streicher, clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and Community Medical Director Midi Health, for a discussion on the imperatives of managing VSM symptoms in perimenopausal and menopausal women. Dr. Streicher will discuss the latest in clinical evidence regarding the implications of prolonged exposure to VSM symptoms, and their link to sleep disturbances, mood disturbances, and decreased cognitive function. She will also discuss emerging research that suggests untreated VSM symptoms may be associated with increased cardiovascular risks and osteoporosis, and how physicians can think about their approach to improving patient care and health outcomes. It is scandalous that medical professionals receive such little training on menopause, even when specialising in obs + gynae. A 2017 study found that only 7% of a cohort of doctors in the last stages of their training felt they would be capable of managing menopausal patients. This short piece just published (Dec 23rd 2023) points out how much more effort goes into knowledge production and training on fertility management. Stanford University has responded to the Lancet medical journal. The Lancet published a 4-article series on menopause this month where Menopause is repeatedly referred to as “overmedicalized” when in reality, the vast majority of women are left to navigate their perimenopausal and menopausal years with no medical guidance whatsoever. Women struggle to find healthcare providers who can partner with them to assess and treat their symptoms and accurately individualize treatment risks and benefits to maximize their long-term health. At Exeltis UK we believe that women deserve to be given choices and education to make informed decisions on what they believe is best for them. Empowering Women to better navigate their menopause is key. Women safety and life quality is at the center of everything that we do. #RethinkingWomenHealthcare

This report may be from the other side of the planet, but research here tells us the same is true in the UK. There is an acute irony that, simply because of their age, many women attain senior roles in parallel with the onset of menopause. Just as the demands on their energy and performance are peaking, they may be undermined by menopausal symptoms and a lack of support. Time for a change. #menopause #womeninleadership #secondspringleaders

Menopause significantly speeds up bone loss and increases the risk of osteoporosis. Research indicates that up to 20% of bone loss can happen during these stages, and approximately 1 in 10 women over the age of 60 are affected by osteoporosis worldwide. HRT is a frontline treatment that can help prevent bone loss and reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis and fractures. Lifestyle changes are important to improving bone health, and a key area is Exercise. A customized exercise regimen supports proper maintenance of the skeleton, including resistance, balance, and weight-bearing exercises. One area often forgotten in this conversation about exercise is the importance of postural alignment. Posture alignment is essential for overall health and can impact bone density, breathing, and pelvic floor function. Poor posture can lead to injuries and negate the benefits of strength training. In the podcast this week, I am joined by Helen Davis 👣, who was diagnosed with osteoporosis during perimenopause and has since then trained to become a Bones for Life teacher. The Bones for Life method, based on the Feldenkrais Method, focuses on dynamic movement and postural alignment to improve bone density and strength. Fascinatingly, it draws on cultural observations from cultures that carry weight on their heads, which was also common in Western cultures around 100 years ago. Helen demonstrated some simple exercises, such as aligning the neck and bouncing on heels, that improve posture and support bone health. If incorporated into our daily routines, these are effective habits for helping to maintain bone health. Tune into the podcast on YouTube https://lnkd.in/dPAaDyXr to watch those demonstrations or listen wherever you listen to podcasts Helen Davis offers an Introduction to Bones for Life course on her website, providing a self-study option for learning and practising this approach. #bonehealth #osteoporosis #menopause
