The company — known as the “D” in the “ABCD” grouping of the biggest agricultural trading houses — said that “ongoing geopolitical tensions” and “climate-related challenges” disrupted markets. Crop traders have seen huge profits in recent years as major harvest losses and disruptions caused by the war in Ukraine led to wild price moves in grains markets. Still, prices are now stabilizing at lower levels amid a rebound in global stockpiles and fading demand. *While volatility in commodity markets is down from extreme levels, 2023 still saw the price swings and market shortages that merchants crave. LDC’s return on equity dipped to 16.6% - still a strong level for a trading company* .

Green-Shoot Selling Risks Might Join Corn Belt's Growing Season Cycles, seasonals, technicals and futures positions may be unfavorable for agriculture and grain prices starting in June. Extreme corn, soybean and wheat hedge-fund shorts have been mostly covered, green shoots often mean selling and the high-price cure from the 2022 peaks might not yet have achieved low-price nadirs. USDA reports can move crop markets, and also offer insight into farm profitability with just a few calculations. The USDA’s annual Acreage report was released today and showed a 1.6% increase in corn acres and a .5% decrease in soybean acres from previous planting intentions, nearly opposite of expectations. Additionally, corn and soybean futures prices had dropped 6% and 7% respectively since the March 28 Prospective Plantings report, for year-end delivery, prior to the report release. The resulting potential revenue decline of $7.3B is a significant amount and banks should be aware of the impact on ag loan portfolios. #fintech & #data for #ag #communitybanks and #farmers
