Willi Studer Prize to INSPIRE Potentials - Quantum Center Master Awardee Raquel García Bellés Cordial congratulations to Raquel García Bellés on having been recognised with the Willi Studer Prize for the best student in the Quantum Engineering Master programme at ETH Zürich. She conducted her Master's thesis in the Quantum Device Lab of Andreas Wallraff (D-PHYS, ETH Zürich) during the spring semester 2023, supported by an INSPIRE Potentials - Quantum Center Master Award (https://lnkd.in/eMxwabJ6).

Tobias Donner appointed Adjunct Professor Congratulations to Tobias Donner, currently Lecturer and Senior Scientist in the Quantum Center group of Tilman Esslinger, on his appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physics at ETH Zürich (D-PHYS, ETH Zürich). Tobias Donner is an internationally recognised pioneer in the field of cavity quantum electrodynamics with ultra-cold atomic ensembles. His research investigates the mechanical aspects of interactions between light and matter deep in the quantum realm. In the past decade he has made a decisive contribution to the research area of many-body cavity quantum electrodynamics. Tobias Donner has received a number of notable research grants, including an European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant. More information https://lnkd.in/dEi-Zf3f

Vivid interest in quantum technologies It was a privilege and a pleasure for us to contribute once again to the Point Zero Forum, an annual gathering of central bankers, regulators, policymakers, industry leaders and technologists from around the world that took place this week in Zurich, organized by Elevandi — set up by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) — and the Swiss State Secretariat for International Finance SIF. An integral part of this three-day event are Innovation Tours, where participants can take a deep dive into cutting-edge technologies at Swiss companies and innovation labs. The Quantum Centre at ETH Zürich traditionally invites participants to experience state-of-the-art quantum technologies. This year, around 40 visitors across the banking, government, academic and private sectors came to see one of the places where the scientific foundations of tomorrow's quantum technologies are being laid. Our Executive Director Anu Unnikrishnan kicked off the programme with an overview of the activities at the Quantum Center, setting the scene for a technology-focused talk by Jean-Claude Besse, a senior scientist in Andreas Wallraff's Quantum Device Lab, on quantum computing, with a focus on superconducting qubits. Our guests then had the opportunity to visit two labs of the Quantum Device group — led by Nathan Lacroix and Josua Schär — as well as a lab of Jonathan Home's group (both at D-PHYS, ETH Zürich Zurich), where Moritz Fontboté Schmidt and colleagues gave an insight into experiments with trapped ions. For many of the participants, it was the first time they had had the opportunity to experience 'quantum' first hand. Their numerous questions demonstrated a deep interest in quantum technologies and the research underpinning the 'second quantum revolution' — making this a highly rewarding experience for guests and hosts alike. ACM SIGPLAN Dissertation Award for Benjamin Bichsel Congratulations to Benjamin Bichsel, who received the John C. Reynolds Doctoral Dissertation Award of the ACM, Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Programming Languages (SIGPLAN) for his PhD thesis "High-level quantum programming". He conducted his doctoral research in the Quantum Center group of Martin Vechev in the Department of Computer Science (D-INFK), ETH Zürich.

Anu Unnikrishnan takes over as new Executive Director We are delighted to announce that Anu Unnikrishnan has taken up the role of Executive Director. She joined the Quantum Centre in May this year and has been actively working with her predecessor Philipp Kammerlander throughout the transition period. During this time, many in the wider Quantum Centre community have already interacted with her, in particular at last week's General Meeting in Schwägalp (https://lnkd.in/dDJkjBP2). Anu completed her PhD in quantum cryptography at the University of Oxford in collaboration with the Sorbonne Université, working with Damian Markham and Vlatko Vedral. She then moved to ETH Zürich for a postdoc position in the Applied Cryptography Group of Kenny Paterson, where alongside her research Anu has enjoyed taking on roles in coordinating events, promoting diversity and representing scientific staff. Quantum research across the full spectrum This week, the 2024 General Meeting of the Quantum Center, ETH Zurich took place in Schwägalp, at the foot of Mount Säntis in northeastern Switzerland. More than 80 participants from 30 research groups across five ETH Zürich departments, the PSI Paul Scherrer Institut and Empa came to learn about each other's research, exchange ideas between groups, and possibly start new collaborations — and friendships.
