Quantum electrodynamics (QED) has been called the most accurate theory humankind has ever produced. And there’s a Columbian among those who developed this fundamental physics: Julian Schwinger (CC’36; GSAS‘39). The Columbia alum shared the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics with Richard Feynman and Sin-Itiro Tomonga for their work that combined quantum mechanics with Einstein’s theory of special relativity to establish quantum electrodynamics, which describes how particles and light interact up to the highest energies. Schwinger’s profound influence on modern-day science extends far beyond his Nobel prize-winning work. To commemorate the myriad areas of physics that Schwinger influenced, the Physics Department is launching a Schwinger Lecture series to bring thought leaders in physics to Columbia University. The first Schwinger Lecturer will be given by Frank Wilczek, a protean theoretical physicist at MIT who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2004 for “the discovery of asymptotic freedom in the theory of the strong interaction” and, like Schwinger, has decisively influenced quantum physics across many domains. Education is not the only "METRIC' to Measure Intelligence.

New research conducted on our 256-qubit Aquila device is now available. In this work, we use two arrays of Rydberg atoms to probe a new quantum phase — the quantum floating phase. This is a quantum critical phase with incommensurate quasi-long-range order, different from ordered and disordered phases. It not only uses a comprehensive theoretical tool to study this phase but also uses concrete experimental results to characterize this phase. Beyond Boundaries: A Dialogue on Science and Faith’ - Accelerator physicists, particle physicists and theologians got together to discuss the common ground between science, philosophy, and religion. The event formed part of the next large collider project at CERN, the Future Circular Collider (FCC). The goal of the FCC is to push the energy and intensity frontiers of particle colliders, with the aim of reaching collision energies of 100 TeV, in the search for new physics. https://lnkd.in/ehN_h_gy

October 8th was a big day in the space of #ArtificialIntelligence with Geoffrey Hinton, the "Godfather of AI," winning the 2024 #NobelPrize in Physics, and it feels like such a well-deserved win for someone who has not only shaped AI but inspired countless minds, mine included! His work on neural networks and deep learning has completely transformed how we think about machines learning like humans—his backpropagation algorithm and Boltzmann machines are now the backbone of so much of what we use today, from speech recognition to self-driving cars. He shares this honor with John J. Hopfield for their foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks. But it’s more than just his technical brilliance—it’s his drive to push boundaries and explore the unknown which I admire. Hinton’s journey shows us that even in the face of doubt or uncertainty, we can build technologies that change the world, if we use them responsibly. He makes you feel like anything is possible if you stay #curious, #dedicated, and a little #rebellious. For me, Hinton is living proof that AI is more than just algorithms—it's about creating tools that expand our understanding of intelligence itself. Now that’s inspiring! Peter Higgs, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, made a groundbreaking contribution to the field of particle physics with his theoretical prediction of the Higgs boson, often referred to as the "God Particle." This fundamental particle plays a crucial role in the Standard Model of particle physics, which is the framework that describes the fundamental forces and particles in the universe. In 1964, Higgs proposed the existence of a new particle as part of a mechanism to explain how other particles acquire mass[1][2]. The existence of the Higgs boson was crucial for the coherence of the Standard Model; without it, the model would not adequately explain the observed phenomena in particle physics. Higgs' theory suggested that a field, now known as the Higgs field, permeates the universe, and particles acquire mass by interacting with this field. The Higgs boson is the quantum of the Higgs field, similar to how a photon is the quantum of the electromagnetic field. The search for the Higgs boson became one of the most significant quests in particle physics, culminating in its discovery on July 4, 2012, by scientists at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN[5][6][7]. This discovery was a monumental achievement, confirming the existence of the Higgs field and providing a key piece of evidence supporting the Standard Model. The LHC, the world's most powerful particle accelerator, was instrumental in this discovery, allowing physicists to observe the Higgs boson by colliding protons at high energies. Peter Higgs, along with François Englert, who independently proposed a similar mechanism, was awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics for their theoretical predictions[2][7]. The discovery of the Higgs boson not only validated a central aspect of the Standard Model but also opened new avenues for research in particle physics, including the study of the boson's properties and its implications for understanding the universe. Despite its nickname, "the God Particle," a term popularized by the media and stemming from the title of a book by Leon Lederman, many scientists, including Higgs himself, find the name misleading and inappropriate[4]. The nickname was intended to highlight the particle's fundamental importance in physics, but it has been criticized for implying a theological significance that the scientific discovery does not possess. 50 years ago, the discovery of the J/psi particle launched the modern era of particle physics. On November 11, 1974, teams working with two of the world’s most powerful accelerators at Brookhaven National Laboratory and SLAC announced that they had independently discovered the same elementary particle. Burton Richter and colleagues from SLAC and Berkeley Lab made their discovery of a new particle they called “psi” by colliding electrons and their antimatter opposites in SLAC’s SPEAR ring collider. Samuel Ting’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology team had found the particle by smashing protons into a beryllium target at Brookhaven National Laboratory. They named it “J”. Two years later Richter and Ting shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for their discovery of the J/psi particle. Their findings proved that the theory of quarks as fundamental building blocks of matter was correct, sparking a “November revolution” launching rapid progress in our understanding of the basic laws of nature.
