There aren’t many leaders that I respect more than Best Buy’s Senior Executive Vice President, Kamy Scarlett. She’s brilliant, fun, warm, supportive, and has a way to cut through BS without having to wear a rebellious Sons of Anarchy leather vest to do it. She leads with her authentic personality and embraces and celebrates the individual personalities of her team. Kamy knows that being a front-line associate in a retail environment is a tough gig with long hours, disrespectful customers, and tons of direction from head office. Beyond product knowledge, they have to know specials, offers, and have a photographic memory of the binder that outlines the 5000 guidelines that dictate everything from how to bag a box to 60-day return policies. Kamy’s plan was simple. She simply went to her frontline staff and told them to forget all of that. There was only one direction they needed to understand and to put into practice: “Be Amazing”. That’s it. Be amazing. Kamy hired her people based on beliefs and values and expected them to be amazing at their jobs but she tossed away the script and let them deliver “AMAZING” in their own authentic way. It’s simpler, it’s easier to commit to memory, and it’s way more fulfilling which creates a much better experience for the customers AND the staff. When you inspire your people to be amazing, they will be.

My client gave me a round-trip first-class flight to Paris to thank me for helping with his relationship and business. Another client would pay the minimum, resist, and expect every ounce of me while I gave my heart to support them with what they needed. Why is there such a big difference? My best clients take the least amount of work, pay the most, and love working with us. I’ve had some nightmare clients who aren’t happy no matter what I do and feel like they are entitled to everything while paying the least! Why is there such a big difference between people? Some people are worth their weight in gold, and others are less valuable than a paperweight! We are all equally of value as human beings. However, not everyone contributes at the same level. Some people are takers and never happy! There are three types of clients: → A-Clients: They love us. We love them. They buy all our products and services. They buy on value not price. They are focused on long-term relationships and the total cost of ownership. They are champions, advocate for us, and send other clients like them. → B-Clients: They have the potential to become an A-Client or if things don’t go well, become a C-Client. They are more unpredictable. → C-Clients: Cheap and nasty. They are high maintenance, require a lot of attention, demand discounts and full service. They are never happy. Here’s what I found works: → Be the A-client I want to have. → Focus on attracting, serving, and retaining A-Clients by being one of these clients with our vendors. Decide to be an A-Client and do whatever it takes to align with this intention. Be the client I wish I had! → Give my B-Clients a chance to become A-Clients. → Identify my C-Clients and send them to my favorite competitor! Ultimately, I have to educate my clients on what value I deliver over and above everyone else. I have to make the benefits tangible and real! How about you? I have a secret. 76 sold-out events back to back to back four years straight. Why? How. It’s not us. It’s THEM! There are many “sales training” companies—good ones, in fact—but none I've seen have achieved even a quarter of that level. Most can have maybe one or two good events yearly. Our secret is this. We don’t have clients, we don’t have a team, we don't have a company. We have A FAMILY, we have AN ARMY!!! We don’t just do business with people. We DO LIFE TOGETHER!!
