Oh, boy! So many tough challenges HR professionals face. I remember — quite shamefully — walking into my first employee investigation with nothing more than a few quick, verbally delivered pointers thrown my way the day before it kicked off. Here's to better training and support for HR professionals moving forward.

I would say that I’m still “early” in my career, but something that I was challenged with, and still sometimes am, is influence. It’s easy to say “this is what we should do, because this is the tried and true best practice/process/etc” and get push back and resentment from leadership. Instead, work on being flexible (within reason) and build solid, logical justification for WHY this is what we should do and tell them in THEIR language.

Once had a term conversation where the employee did not come in on the day we planned to Term for cause. So the manager, my boss & I got into a room to call her. She answered the managers call for a moment, until he began the conversation and then she hung up! Then she called me, i answered and began the convo and she hung up! Had to think on our feet to send out the details to her...even though she refused to hear the message. It was a messy separation. Overall Career tips/lessons learned: Keep your sense of humor, esp about yourself. Don't be afraid to ask questions...but know when to ask the questions. Know your audience.

On my 2nd day on a new job, without proper onboarding and notice I was asked to conduct an interview that I knew absolutely nothing about, minutes before it was scheduled to start..Luckily had my assistant with me that had been in the system longer. Would have been a total disaster.
