👂 No matter what you are doing, listen first. This is especially true when creating impact and changing systems and what Senan Ebrahim, MD, PhD learned when creating Hikma Health. To truly create something that would change the way refugees get medical care, it required spending time in those refugee camps, listening to stories from people trying to receive basic and life-saving care, and hearing first-hand from doctors what they need to be able to give that care to hundreds of patients a day. 🎧 Listen to the conversation between English Sall and Senan Ebrahim, MD, PhD here: https://lnkd.in/e9RapM3Y

Recently, one of the largest reception centers for Ukrainian newcomers in the Netherlands was closed. It was announced that 99.8% of all places were occupied. According to the latest estimates, since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, around 100,000 people have found shelter in the Netherlands alone. Therefore, it's no wonder that the issue of housing, in an already tense market even without war, has become even more acute. Initially, newcomers were temporarily accommodated by local people, office buildings were converted into housing, and container housing gained popularity. But there's still a shortage of #housingcrisis . What is the current situation from the perspective of newcomers and various stakeholders? #opendialogue What creative solutions have been found? What is the latest information on the topic? All this will be discussed at the Conference from Opora Foundation: "𝐻𝑜𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑑 𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑈𝑘𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑁𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑠: 𝐿𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝐿𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑛𝑒𝑑, 𝐵𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑒𝑠, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐹𝑢𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑠," which I have the honor to #moderate #paneldiscussion 📅 Date: March 26 🕑 Time: 14:00-18:00 📍 Location: The Hague Register (places are limited): https://lnkd.in/e62jPtYx

I'm thrilled to announce the online release of a project close to my heart: a booklet dedicated to the memory of the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) healthcare workers in Syria, those heroes who lost their lives trying to save others at the risk of their own safety. They paid the ultimate price for their noble deeds. As a consultant for Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS)' "Research, Media, and Advocacy" project, I've had the privilege of witnessing their resilience firsthand. Inspired by their stories, I utilized the life story approach in sociology to collect data and then crafted 11 emotionally powerful stories using advocacy storytelling techniques. Each story goes beyond numbers and statistics, representing a life of dedication and sacrifice that words cannot describe. Beyond the numbers and statistics, each person we talk about on this page represents a life far longer than the lines we have written between the date of birth and the date of death, a journey of dedication and sacrifice that words cannot describe. Their legacy is inscribed in every life they touched, every patient they cared for, and every act of compassion they performed in the midst of adversity. For us, they all existed, and they are all remarkable human beings that we do not want to forget. We aim to bring to your attention the ongoing events in this region where those who save lives are being attacked, and we want to emphasize that those responsible for these actions have still not been punished. Join me in honoring their bravery by exploring the booklet here for English: https://lnkd.in/eegmtiit. Let's remember and honor these extraordinary individuals together. #HealthcareHeroes #ConflictZones #SAMS #HumanitarianAid"

At the 18th International Conference and AGM of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP) I made the intervention below: "Performing Conflict Transformation: Cultural Policy and the Wellbeing of Displaced Children in Abagena Camp" Internally Displaced Persons face immense physical and emotional trauma, necessitating innovative approaches to healing and recovery. It becomes particularly complicated where children are involved as they do not have the experience and abilities to process trauma in a manner that it does not affect them later on in their adult life. In Abgena IDP Camp (and perhaps elsewhere), this particular need of the children does not receive adequate attention as parents and adult caregivers, understandably, are engrossed with fending for food and other needs, at the expense of the emotional wellbeing of the children. This is where I find cultural performances and games as a contextually relevant tool for engaging the children in order to build in them resilience, stay in touch with their heritage despite being displaced, provide for them an enabler to express emotions, and to rebuild relationships and foster amongst the children a sense of community. Be that as it may, cultural policy and action in Nigeria does not provide deliberately for these engagements, just as conflict transformation initiatives do not mainstream the arts and culture as experienced in Abagena Camp. Such a complimentary approach will ensure that children process their trauma adequately so as to grow up without losing touch with their heritage, and with little or no effect of their violent experiences on their adult life. In the drama piece created by the children themselves, with profound insights into the issues in farmers-herders conflict and possible ways to tackle same.

Research Communities of Practice | Research Paper 3 Abdirahman Said Bile's study in our third RCoP paper delves into the effectiveness of local peace committees in Puntland, Somalia, particularly in contexts lacking national government support. It critically examines the Adadda committee's role in fostering sustainable peace through grassroots participation and comprehensive peacebuilding strategies. This research underscores the committee's success in conflict prevention, community relationship building, and public awareness, contributing to the broader debates on local peace efforts under challenging conditions. Co-produced with the Puntland Development and Research Center (PDRC), the paper showcases the importance of local initiatives in peacebuilding and the need for diverse community involvement in these processes. Public Policy Analyst | ED @africasmorning | Facilitator @BoqerSchool | Africa's morning is at hand.
There is friction at every human-to-human interaction. These frictions occur in the homes; between husbands and wives, between parents and children, and between siblings. It occurs in the workplace between employers and employees, between colleagues, and between businesses and the communities they serve. It occurs within every human organisation - including churches, political parties, estate associations, etc. But these frictions also occur at the societal level. It could be between competing identities, in which case there may be heightened awareness of ethnic, tribal, national or racial differences. It could also happen at the social stratification level where there could be heightened awareness of the differences between the haves and the have-nots. These frictions, when not managed can be destabilising. Some lead to stagnation, unhealthy competitions, strifes, civil disturbances, conflicts, and even wars. Why do these frictions exist? Is there a fix for it? How can developing states manage the often heightened ethnic differences? Find answers to all these and more by 9:00pm (WAT) this evening, Tuesday, May 14, 2024 during the 19th episode of Boqer School of Government. Register in advance for this masterclass: https://lnkd.in/dpE2cmWY Visit https://lnkd.in/dC4TjtXB to learn more about Boqer School of Government. Africa’s morning is at hand. Chima Christian

Kenya's youth are a dynamic force with immense potential to drive the nation forward. However, challenges like unemployment, limited education, and social exclusion hinder their progress and contribute to instability. By investing in programs that foster social inclusion and prevent violence, we can harness this potential. Drawing insights from successful initiatives like the Kenya Youth Employment and Opportunities Project (KYEOP), we can develop effective strategies to empower young people and build a stronger Kenya. ✍🏻Learn more about these strategies and how to implement them in our post below.
