Last Friday, I was delighted to attend the MEDAYS forum in Tangier, considered an international geostrategic event in Africa and the Arab world. The panel I attended revolved around the subject of investment in the healthcare sector, which one of the speakers summed up in a very essential and pertinent question: what could be more urgent than this? I was impressed by dr. Azhadi's speech, which covered several aspects of the subject in just a few minutes, the most important of which, i think, was the one dealing with the fact that the socio-economic issues raised by this subject depend first and foremost on the political will to give priority to health, and that this requires a participatory approach in order to build a resilient and robust system in a context of globalization, the threat of which is constantly increasing. In this same panel, i also discovered a piece of information that i had either totally overlooked or never paid much attention to: only 50% of the african population has access to basic healthcare. this is a clear demonstration of the inequality of access to healthcare for all. In short, this sector needs urgent intervention by drawing up an objective and comprehensive roadmap.

Paving the road for citizen participation in climate change and health: kickoff stakeholder meeting 🚀 The euPrevent Active Citizenship Participation (ACP) project is poised for a significant milestone: 📅 on 30 November the ACP project held its first meeting with the stakeholders in Eupen, at the Parliament of the German-speaking Community of Belgium. The ACP project is an initiative aimed at establishing a sustainable citizen participation framework in the Euregion Meuse-Rhine (EMR), initially focused on addressing critical issues such as climate change and health, and to be expanded to other health related issues as well. This project is built on the close collaboration between the project group and a diverse stakeholder group. We have a dynamic cadre of stakeholders ranging from policymakers, scientists, to citizens and healthcare professionals, each contributing a distinct perspective. Why? To elevate citizen participation beyond rhetoric to a tangible reality. Our stakeholders take on a crucial role in providing invaluable insights, and establishing a robust foundation for a sustainable citizen participation. The kickoff meeting marks the initiation of our journey towards achieving sustainable citizen participation. What an energizing discussion - thanks for being a wonderful facilitator WINNIE LUBEMBE and for being my co-panelists Dr. Anne Musuva-Njoroge. We talked about why transformational leadership, why women, why healthcare, why now, and the answer was .. why not?! Women make up close to 50% of the global population, 70% of the health workforce in most countries, and only 25-40% of senior leadership positions in health. Yet global evidence indicates that women in leadership at organizational and national levels significantly (and positively) impact health decisionmaking, health outcomes/ impact, and finances! What will it take? Strong policies, data, and importantly IMPLEMENTATION of those policies/ regulation that look at: - Getting women there (staying in education, discarding the idea of “female” professions, teaching leadership skills, inclusive curricula etc); - Keeping women there (mentorship, peer support, gender responsive policies); and - Ensuring they thrive (pay equity, pathways for growth and promotion, safety from discrimination and sexual harassment etc). #AfricaEvidenceWeek2024 aims to promote and showcase the state of evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) in Africa. In her blog post, Siziwe Ngcwabe (BA Social work, MBA, MPM.) highlights that the Africa Evidence Network (AEN) has established several communities of practice (CoPs) to advance its work in 2023: https://lnkd.in/dENgXuUJ. The CoPs will serve as tools to enhance #evidence capacities and #collaboration in #Africa. She mentions that this is a wonderful opportunity for mentorships within the CoPs, where individuals can learn from each other. The purpose of the CoPs is to enhance capacities and foster collaborations in the evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) sector in Africa.
