Gas Turbine Blow-off system. As its name suggests, a Gas Turbine Blow-off system uses a network of ducts and valves to blow off compressed air from selected compressor stages, during Gas Turbine start-up and shutdown. When this system is operating, compressed air is extracted , in the case below as exemple, from the sixth and tenth compressor stages and is discharged into the Turbine exhaust system to prevent compressor surge and blades stalling, because the Gas Turbine rotors are designed to rotate at the rate speed. Because the Gas Turbine with its compressor must pass through the speed range below the permissible range on start-up and shutdown, it is necessary to blow off an amount of the compressed air from the selected compressor locations, depending on Turbine manufactors, without travel through the combustors and the Turbine sections. A compressor surge phenomenon is a form of aerodynamic instability in axial and centrifugal flow compressors. A Blow-off system purpose is to help Gas Turbine pass through its critical speeds for easy and risk-free. After the Gas Turbine exceed its critical speeds, where the surging rotor is no longer a concern the Blow-off system is shut down.

What causes a steam turbine to trip? A turbine trip occurs when the turbine exceeds its rated RPM, which actuates immediate closure of the turbine's stop valves, isolating all motive energy to the turbine for a shut down. Larger steam turbines operate at rated speeds of 3600 RPM for a 60 Hz design or 3000 RPM for a 50 Hz design. The following conditions initiate a turbine trip: ● Low bearing oil pressure. Low control oil (hydraulic fluid) pressure. High condenser back pressure. Turbine overspeed.

SPM-5100 Steam Turbine with Generator The Steam Turbine with Generator program represents a typical three-stage steam turbine for generating electrical power. High pressure (HP) steam is fed to the high-pressure stage of the Steam Turbine. Intermediate pressure (IP) steam is withdrawn from the outlet of the HP stage, reheated in an external Reheater and is returned to the IP stage. The steam leaving the IP stage is internally routed to the low pressure (LP) stage. Exhaust steam from the LP stage is condensed in the Surface Condenser using cooling water. The Surface Condenser operates under vacuum. Steam condensate from the Surface Condenser is collected in the Hotwell and pumped by the Condensate Pumps back to the Deaerator. Electric power is generated in the Generator which is attached to the shaft of the Steam Turbine. Auxiliary lube oil and sealing systems are simulated.

Once the tower is fully erected, the nacelle and rotor blades are installed at the top. Final inspections and adjustments are made to ensure everything is correctly aligned and secure.

What is Inlet Distortion? In an ideal world, the inlet of gas turbines, compressors, jet engines, and other rotating equipment will experience uniform flow. This means that the inlet of the equipment will be unobstructed, and the fluid entering into the inlet will not be flowing with severe entry angle or other unfavorable conditions. There are many different types of inlet distortion, but in simplified terms, inlet distortion is non-uniform flow upstream of the inlet of rotating equipment and non-uniform flow in the intake duct. Most equipment, especially jet engines, can handle a minimal level of inlet distortion, especially if it was taken into consideration during the design of the equipment. In the most severe cases though, this non-uniform pressure distribution around the inlet face can affect equipment performance, and even lead to equipment failure and shortened equipment life. PRINCIPLE OF AXIAL FLOW COMPRESSOR : 1. The principle of the axial flow compressor is basically the same as that of the centrifugal flow compressor, it converts kinetic energy into pressure energy. 2. In axial flow compressor, airflow is parallel to the axis of rotation 3. The axial flow compressor consists of a. Rotors, connected to the central shaft and rotated at high speed b. Stators are fixed and do not rotate. The job of stators is to increase pressure. 4. The spaces between the rotor and stator is divergent. 5. In the rotor, which is turned continuously at high speed by the turbine, mechanical energy is added and converted into both kinetic (velocity) energy and potential (pressure) energy. 6. Within the stator, the pressure is increased by the conversion of the kinetic energy into pressure energy. 7. The rotor stages can be seen as doing the same job as the impeller in a centrifugal compressor, while the stator stages can be compared to the diffuser in a centrifugal compressor. 8.
