You’ve probably heard of #greenwashing, but have you ever heard of the inverted concept: #greenhushing? In this week’s episode of #SocialImpactPowerChats, StratLabs CEO and Founder Elizabeth Neufeld breaks down this (new to us) term, and suggests that companies sometimes fail to convey the essence of their #ESG work because they are so hung up on the technicality of it all. She encourages businesses to get back to basics, and not miss an opportunity to share meaningful, authentic work.

Where we see a lot of mistakes being made is that especially larger corporations, as they're trying to be too technical, they're trying to explain the technicality behind what they're doing versus just the purpose. And so, you know, I think that they get into trouble because you they get into the, the legality of what they're doing and you know, the reasoning. And then they get worried about greenwashing. And then in, in essence, they're green hushing because they're not saying anything. And so I go back to what I said in the beginning, which is authenticity is key. Pick one story, pick one story. One farmer who you're working with, who is working on sustainable agriculture, who has a wonderful story to share with the world and tell that story and put resources toward developing a video that can be used across different platforms that highlights their work. And leave your brand out of it. Your brand will get inserted into it by just the nature of telling the story. So.
