Language is dynamic and nuanced, changing at a rapid pace at along with social norms, perceptions, and opportunities for inclusion. The following, written by Labib Rahman and reviewed and approved by the Stanford Disability Initiative, is a starter guide (non-exhaustive, non-definitive) for considering disability equity (and practicing deference to individual experiences) in the words we use as an institutional community. Facing adversity is a part of life but the inequality of the average disabled person's experience within our built environments compared to the very few of us lucky to be born without disability is astronomical. #DisabilityPrideMonth might be coming to a close in a few days, but that doesn't mean that we should park the perspectives, experiences, and stories of disabled people within our community until next year. Check out our interview with some of our consultants who live with a disability as they share times in life when they've encountered adversity and how discussions surrounding disability beyond this month will make an impact for the betterment of our world. #DisabilityPride #DisabilityAware #ChronicIllnessAwareness #DisabledAndProud #InvisibleDisabilities #InvisibleDisability #DisabledCreators #DirectAccess #Accessibility #Inclusion

To change your life, first you need to change your paradigm around it. The only way through which you can change anything is to try applying different perspectives around it, this is because we usually see things as we are rather than how they are. There are several ways through which you can change your paradigm and one them is to recognize the power of what you see/hear in relation to what you do and what you get. Then choose wisely what you see and what you do so as to change what you get. Paradigm shift about disability and disability inclusion is very vital for the success of the full participation of persons with disabilities in development processes. INTEGRATION AND INCLUSION: Integration and inclusion are often used interchangeably, but they do not necessarily mean the same thing. Integration refers to the act of bringing someone or people into an existing group or system, while inclusion means creating an environment that values and respects all individuals, regardless of their differences, disability included. You can be integrated into a system or group and still suffer discrimination and stigma, but in an environment where total inclusion is embraced, the seed of love, respect, empathy flourishes. And since we are all candidates of disability, why don't we just agree that we are all going to push for a more inclusive society where everyone lives with dignity and happiness? Win on Dragons’ Den leaders in education mentoring young people to grow their potential through the life skills gained from performing arts, franchisor of 60 franchise partners, our ‘Future Fund’ charity is our legacy 🫶
Read that again…… My child has faced exclusion & discrimination (whether direct or indirect) FIVE times! That’s FIVE times too many! Excluding a child because of their disability is not only unfair, but it is also discriminatory and harmful. Every child deserves the right to be included and accepted for who they are, regardless of any physical or cognitive differences they may have. Exclusion based on disability sends a message that the child is not valued or worthy of participating in the same activities as their peers, which can have a lasting impact on their self-esteem and sense of belonging. It is important to promote inclusivity and celebrate diversity in all aspects of life, including education and social interactions. By embracing and supporting children with disabilities, we create a more compassionate and inclusive society for all. Families who face diagnosis are already going through trauma - support them ❤️ #everychildmatters #disabilityinclusion #disabilityawareness #inclusivity #diverse #celebratedifferences 🙌

Some time ago, I came across a post from Odette Jansen BSc MEd recommending resources to learn more about accessibility and inclusion. Today I just finished 📚 "Demystifying Disability" by Emily Ladau and here are a few extracts that resonated with me: "Disability isn't a problem to be fixed, but a natural part of the human experience." - Emily Ladau "Ableism is attitudes, actions, and circumstances that devalue people because they are disabled or perceived as having a disability" - Emily Ladau "Accessibility is about making things more equitable so that disabled people have the same opportunities and support to thrive as do nondisabled people. It's about removing barriers to participation, engagement, and understanding so that all people regardless of ability, can experience the world around us to the fullest extent possible in ways that work for our minds and bodies" - Emily Ladau Now, instead of continuing to share a full list of quotes that I would love to highlight, I hope these three will spark your curiosity and inspire you to read the book, starting your journey to learn more about disability. I will follow the author's advice and continue learning. If you have a book, documentary, or podcast that shares the work or experience of disabled people, I'd love to hear your recommendations. #RepresentationMatters #AbleismExists #LearningJourney

At ECRI, we are dedicated to advancing effective, evidence-based healthcare globally for all individuals. As we celebrate Disability Pride Month, we honor the history, achievements, and experiences of the disability community. With over 1.3 billion globally living with disabilities, they constitute the largest minority group worldwide. Ensuring equitable care for those with physical and intellectual disabilities is one of our Top 10 Patient Safety Concerns this year. Health inequities arise from unjust conditions faced by people with disabilities, including stigma, discrimination, poverty, exclusion from education and employment, and barriers faced in the health system itself. This month marks the 34th anniversary of the American Disabilities Act, a landmark policy that prohibits discrimination. Since then, dedicated advocacy for people with disabilities has paved the way for systematic advancements in accessibility and inclusion. At ECRI, we strive to foster a culture of acceptance, inclusion, and belonging every day. Our commitment to equality and accessibility in healthcare extends to all individuals, ensuring that each person has equitable opportunities and support. The world can be a better place if we, as individuals are committed to being interested and having a community mindset rather than a solo-mindset. Now, isn't it astonishing how in our so-called modern society, we still turn a blind eye to the most basic acts of humanity? Picture this: a man struggling to fix his wheelchair on a busy street, clearly in need of assistance. Yet, pedestrians walk by as if he’s invisible, too absorbed in their own worlds to lend a hand. This isn't just apathy; it's a stark reminder of our collective ignorance and unwillingness to engage with the realities of disability. Where's our empathy, our sense of community? We preach about inclusivity, but our actions—or lack thereof—speak volumes. It’s high time we stop ignoring those in need and start embodying the compassion we claim to value. A disabled person/disability isn’t a cause to be overlooked. The world will be a much better place with inclusion in practice. #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilityAdvocate #Inclusion
