The economic slowdown forces more workers to accept poorly paid jobs. Commenting on how the economy plays a significant role in unfair compensation, HR Specialist Hazem Fayed, says, “A weak economy forces employees to accept poor compensation, which gradually becomes the standard across the board. This economic pressure perpetuates unfair compensation practices within organizations.” Economic changes impact large enterprises more aggressively than small and medium enterprises, and adjustments in large organizations take longer to plan and implement, says Oola Ali Elkelany, MBA, People & Culture Expert and HR Consultant. The average income in the United States is around $74,500. However, when excluding the top 10 earners, it drops to $65,000. Exclude the top 50, and it plummets to $48,000. Excluding the top 1,000, it further falls to just $35,500. This highlights how averages can be misleading. In HR, relying on averages for metrics like Turnover Rates, Average Salary, Absenteeism etc. can mask critical issues within specific departments or groups.
