Did you know that this year, you can celebrate New Year twice? But how? These two islands are incredibly close, yet they couldn’t feel farther apart. Just 5 kilometers of sea separate them, and in winter, you can even walk across the frozen water to travel from one to the other. But here’s where things get fascinating. Imagine starting your journey at 10:00 a.m., expecting to reach the other island in about an hour. Yet, when you arrive, the clock shows a time that doesn’t make any sense. How is this possible? These islands sit on opposite sides of the International Date Line, creating a staggering 22-hour time difference. A short walk takes you not just to a new place but practically into a different day. These fascinating islands lie between America and Russia. That’s why these islands are called “Yesterday Island” (Little Diomede) and “Tomorrow Island” (Big Diomede). You can celebrate New Year on Big Diomede first, then hop to Little Diomede to celebrate it again!

New Year Traditions Around the World: A Glimpse into Global Celebrations 🌍 As the world rings in the New Year, diverse cultures celebrate this occasion in unique and fascinating ways. Here are some fun and lesser-known traditions from different corners of the globe: Spain 🇪🇸 - On New Year's Eve, people eat 12 grapes at midnight—one for each stroke of the clock—to bring luck for each month of the coming year. Japan 🇯🇵 - Known as Oshogatsu, New Year is celebrated with family gatherings, special foods like osechi (a variety of dishes symbolizing prosperity), and visits to shrines for blessings. Ecuador 🇪🇨 - In Ecuador, people create Año Viejo effigies, which represent the old year, and burn them to symbolize new beginnings and the destruction of bad luck. Denmark 🇩🇰 - Danes celebrate by smashing plates on friends' doorsteps. The more broken pieces, the more luck you'll have in the new year! Brazil 🇧🇷 - In Brazil, many wear white clothing to symbolize peace and purity. Some also jump seven waves for good luck, especially in coastal cities. Each culture brings its own flavors, rituals, and joy to this global celebration. So, no matter where you are, New Year’s is always a reminder of new beginnings and shared hope. #NewYear #GlobalTraditions #CulturalCelebrations #HappyNewYear

Today is the Chúxī: The Heart of Chinese New Year's Eve Celebration! It marks the final day of the lunar year and holds deep cultural significance in Chinese tradition. It is a day of reunion, preparation, and honoring family bonds, and it sets the stage for the celebrations that follow. For many, Chúxī is as much about honoring the past year as it is about welcoming the new one with fresh hopes and dreams. Chúxī is not just a time to celebrate the transition into a new year; it’s a moment to honor family, tradition, and hope for the future. It’s a magical evening full of warmth, unity, and joy, setting the tone for the festivities that continue through Chinese New Year. Whether it’s through shared meals, fireworks, or heartfelt reunions, Chúxī remains a cornerstone of Chinese culture, fostering a sense of togetherness and optimism.

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day! Here are some fun, important facts: • OU honors a wide variety of holidays and events. Among these events includes Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Native American Heritage Month, which recognize the rich history and culture of Native peoples. • Tribal Nations are key contributors to OU, investing in multi-million dollar projects, providing financial support, promoting research initiatives, and supporting their citizens to pursue higher education here. Many also employ OU alumni and offer internship opportunities open to all students. • In 2019, tribes in Oklahoma contributed $15.6 billion (yes, with a “B”) to the state’s economy—a significant impact that would have otherwise fallen on taxpayers. (Spoiler: It’s projected to be higher for 2021). • Did you know that Rep. Tom Cole, Will Rogers, Tom Love, Jim Thorpe, and Maria Tall Chief, among so many others, are or were citizens of Tribal Nations in Oklahoma? Raise your hand if are represented by Rep. Tom Cole, used the airport, bought gasoline from Love’s Travel Stops, celebrated decorated American athletes at the Olympics, or enjoy the revolution of modern day American ballet. 🙋🏽♀️ I acknowledge that I greatly benefit from the significant contributions of Tribal Nations and tribal people to the University of Oklahoma, the State of Oklahoma, and the United States.
𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬' 𝐃𝐚𝐲! Join us in celebrating and honoring the vibrant histories, cultures and contributions of Indigenous communities with a full day of events on our Norman campus. Indigenous Peoples' Day honors and gives recognition of tribal nations across North, Central, and South America and the Pacific Islands. This year's events are sponsored and organized by OU's American Indian Student Association. Celebrations include tribal flag walk, tipi setup, drum and song, dance performances, various cultural workshops, and cultural foods and beverages. Celebrated annually on the second Monday of October, Indigenous Peoples' Day is meant to honor and celebrate the holiday with a glimpse into many activities showcasing Indigenous culture.
