Take a 2 minute break from your inbox for a quick environmental history lesson! The Spanish-American War in 1898 might seem like an unusual starting point for a discussion about environmental policy. However, it played a crucial role in shaping modern environmental law. Just months prior to the Spanish-American War, the U.S. deployed the USS Maine battleship on a “friendly” visit to Havana Harbor to protect American interests during the Cuban War of Independence. On February 15, 1898, the USS Maine mysteriously exploded, killing all 266 onboard. The combination of limited forensics, political pressure and an already tense standoff with Spain, the escalation to war was practically a foregone conclusion. The sinking of the USS Maine was a rallying cry, "Remember the Maine! To hell with Spain!" that sparked the first attack in Manila Bay.

Many times, when people ask me what I do for a living, I try to explain that I work with people who dedicate their lives to contribute to a better, greener and more sustainable future. These people and communities are, inexplicably, subjected to attacks that can escalate to brutal murders and attacks with irreversible consequences. This explainer from Michel FORST lays out very clearly the relevance of environmental defenders' roles, some of the threats they face, and the duties we all have to procure a safe environment for them. The Aarhus Convention is a crucial tool to enhance the role of defenders and protect them when reporting corruption, irregularities, and all sorts of misbehaviour from companies headquartered in the EU worldwide. https://lnkd.in/gW7_N_re

"The recently-published report by Global Witness shows that 196 land and environmental defenders were killed in 2023 for standing up for the planet, their homes, and their communities. On average, that is one #defender murdered every other day last year. Twenty-five (25) defenders were murdered in Asia in 2023, with an alarming rate of reported enforced disappearances. Defenders often live on the frontlines of the #climatecrisis. But for their work, they are the targets of violence - and lethal and non-lethal attacks. Yet defenders remain steadfast in their struggle. Their voices cannot be silenced. The Asia Pacific Network of Environmental Defenders (APNED) calls for governments in Asia to take the annual report of Global Witness into consideration and ensure protection for environmental human rights defenders in the region." #DefendTheDefenders Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gF9pHNfP Read the full APNED statement here: https://lnkd.in/g5Zh2m5S --Repost from Asia Pacific Network of Environmental Defenders (APNED)'s facebook page: https://lnkd.in/gAQekJhg

History whispers through treaties, rivers murmur stories of broken promises, and ancestral lands bear the scars of injustice. But a powerful voice is rising ✊: Environmental Justice must recognize the unique legal and natural connection of Native Peoples to the land ️, as affirmed by treaties, agreements, and covenants (signed, but often broken ). This principle honors the inherent sovereignty and self-determination of Indigenous Nations 🪶, a right enshrined in these agreements. It's time to mend the past and ensure environmental justice for all! Read more about The Principle of Environmental Justice 11 here: https://buff.ly/3XrOd1I #EnvironmentalJustice #IndigenousRights
