We are thrilled to introduce our Heritage Buildings Research Lead, Ivana Paunovic! Ivana has a wealth of experience in both Structural and Fire Engineering at Undergraduate and Post Graduate levels. A message from Ivana: "Delta Research and Development is in the process of starting the new fire-structural research, and we are looking forward to it! We are planning to explore what happens to different construction material properties when exposed to activated sprinklers and firefighting fire attack environments, where the construction elements are heated by fire and then rapidly cooled by the use of sprinklers/firefighting measures. More details to come in the following months!"

I am attending the 17th International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reaction in Ottawa. Along with a paper submitted with some of the results from my Masters thesis, ICARR is a great opportunity to stay up-to-date with the latest research on concrete durability when it comes to aggregates reacting in an alkali environment - such as concrete! The topics covered here are especially important for structures subjected to high humidity levels, such as bridges and tunnels!

  Next week marks the Structures in Fire Conference in Portugal which many of our graduate team will be attending and presenting. This year we have papers featuring steel, concrete and timber materials in fire. Each paper brings an added important consideration and theme to the research presented using case studies to exemplify the importance of research findings: Experimental and Numerical Response of Steel Trusses Exposed to a Localized Fire. This study communicates principles of HBIF in stadia to structural practitioners and the inter-relation of these themes; Post-Fire Structural Performance of Corroded Concrete Beams. This study discusses the important aspects of informalized settlement fires; and Towards Alternative Fire Design Solutions for Canadian Wood-to-Wood Connections. One which I will present personally discusses a recent Toronto fire of heritage infrastructure and our need to better understand timber structures in fire. The study uses blue light technologies to investigate the degradation of timber in fire (charring and ember generations).

Introducing a faster, easier way to obtain inputs for better pavement design. Dr. Pedro Romero and his team recently developed a method to predict the elastic properties of asphalt using a test known as IDEAL CT, which assesses the cracking potential of asphalt.
