This week at Happy Finish, I had the chance to evaluate Tripo AI’s newly launched Gen 2 image-to-3D model, exploring how tools like this might impact our creative production workflows. In the spirit of "Learning by doing" I challenged myself create a minimalist, polygonal chess set. I started by generating the chess piece designs in Midjourney, settling on a clean, modern aesthetic. From there, I used Tripo AI to convert those images directly into usable 3D models, taking about 30 seconds total, which I then scaled and prepared for 3D printing. The process was a peek at a future where AI-driven workflows can rapidly prototype digital and physical 3D assets. I can see potential applications for the the prototyping of toys or table top games, visual retail planning, as well as many applications in the film, animation, gaming and immersive experience industries. However, it was immediately apparent that while Tripo is fantastic for quick, creative iterations, it and tools like it still struggle with the repeatable precision required for real-world product visualization. The generative nature of these tools currently lacks the necessary accuracy and consistency to reproduce and preserve digital product twins to the level that would satisfy a product design team, either as a 2D or 3D output. Advanced techniques such as LoRA's and ControlNets in more extensible systems like those from Stability AI are however rapidly maturing and i'm curious to see how these develop in 2025. I privately shared this site with some friends, colleagues and family and got them to scan through the backlog of stories I plan on writing and to vote on which should come next. Based on results from 100 votes, the next story I will write will be on: Subjectivity as a Service - The role of humans in the labour & consumer market when AGIs outclass human workers in all tasks I plan on writing 12 stories this year (one a month), some of which will be deep dives, some of which will feature rich interactive user interfaces and simulators. The whole thing is an experiment but hopefully good fun and useful for you and your budding Inventor! 👉🏼We need more problem solvers in this world and we're not going to get there with our current spoon fed blindly-following-instructions systems that we have at the moment. Client ask: Can you turn me into an action figure? Me: SAY NO MORE! I have you covered! I particularly had a blast with this, where the goal was to re-imagine someone as an action figure, Then 3D print the created image! Granted, I'm not an expert in 3D printing, But custom training a person's image, then creating them as action figures in various scenarios, Got them going on the task of printing various action figures for specific people.   I've often posted about my love of open source and custom trained models, Whether it's image generators, or language models. This right here is a big reason why! Whether it's setting up a custom chat agent, trained specifically on a customer's business, Or a fun concept like creating action figures based on a person's image, Possibilities are endless! With the help of HokusPokus.ai, I suspect there will be some unique toys under the tree for a number of people this holiday season! This is a fun concept that I personally like working on, Whether it's custom toys, products, or even pets. And yes, we've also done pet portraits!!! This seems promising! Consider the environmental cost of a 1000-square-foot building, where we need about 7 to 8000 bricks with 9-inch walls. The environmental cost of this is huge considering that about 50 to 60% of bricks are comprised of the topsoil. The formation of topsoil is a very slow process. In ideal conditions, it can take about 100 to 500 years to form just one inch of topsoil. This rate can vary significantly based on environmental factors such as climate, the type of parent material, and biological activity. In some regions, particularly those with cold and dry climates, it may take over 1,000 years for an inch of topsoil to develop (Soil Science Society of America). The topsoil is the nutrient-rich layer which helps in water retention, supporting root development and is the ideal habitat for microorganisms necessary for plant growth. It also helps prevent soil erosion, and carbon sequestration and is key for agricultural productivity. We should welcome such initiatives after evaluating the pros and cons. I am sure they would have done them. There is hope for the future!
