Transition from fossil to electrical cars brings huge societal questions Massive number of big electrical cars, privately owned, will need massive lithium mining, including massive water use, with massive negative impact on almost everything There is simply not enough lithium for massive battery making We need other batteries or other engines or smarter concepts or all of that There is ever less water and it is needed for more vital survival of Homo sapiens on this planet People need to move from A to B, alone, in groups, with some goods People do not need 3 tons private tanks equipped with massive amounts of lithium each (There are people striving to get insanely rich by investing in production of these tanks and these mines for sure) We do need smart and reasonable moderate mobility for all with minimal damage To get a doable deal for planet and men, we obviously need something else than the irrational, inherently wasteful, over-the-top liberal capitalist market machinery as we know it

Whoa. That was an intense DocVille debate. Occasion: a docu by Peter Tom Jones promoting the renaissance of metal-mining in Europe. We agreed on the following -Europe is currently losing the greater geopolitical game -We are beyond the peak of global free trade neoliberalism -We have to make our European economy less import/China-dependent -An amount X of metals will need to be mined for the energy transition -Some metal mining will need to be in Europe, some outside Europe -A lot of peoples are affected by mining -Affected people should benefit more from mining -Women driving mega electric mining trucks is cool -Making cement from mining waste with bioleaching is cool I said what I felt was missing -Mining to meet all DESIRES of all people is a really bad idea -The docu had zero answers for how to be net positive for communities -The docu makes a God-like claim of "net positive biodiversity" -There was no word on South Europe turning into a semi-Sahara already -There was no attention for untapped urban mining / upcycling potential My debate opened with some of this, to the relief of many in the audience. Opening move: "The docu begins with 3 words: “Europeans want Tesla's”. Well, I'm European. I don't want a tesla. I want good mobility AND I want a liveable future for my kids. I want trains, trams and smaller shared electric vehicles. I never owned nor needed a private car. But the issue is not my private life, the issue is that it doesn’t matter how many Europeans want Tesla’s. It is not because my kids want to live in a villa with a pool that I will work 2 jobs to make sure they do - that would cross my boundaries. It is not because Musk wants a Mars colony that we should allow him to channel that many resources towards building one – that would cross planetary boundaries. The docu shows what following the logic of all the wanting leads to. We are told we need 42 times more lithium. We are told “we need 50 new lithum mines by 2030”. We are shown where the lithium in the EU is. Portugal and France have big deposits. What viewers should know is that Portugal’s government fell, linked to corruption in the attempt to force a mega water consuming lithium mining upon the population, in a water scarce area ravaged by forest fires every summer. What viewers did not see is that already today you have localized water wars in France, where thousands of people fight with thousands of police over highly unfair distribution of the little remaining water in the area. Here is the nobrainer for me: When you force new lithium mines on the French masses who are already collateral damage of the neoliberal era under ever bigger attack from forest fires to droughts, by decree from the Elysee, without Free Prior and Informed Consent and you take their remaining clean water away from them – so that the people from Paris can drive a tesla – do you expect them to sit back idly? Using AI, scientists whittled down 32 million options into just 18. 🤖 The work could have taken decades in lab. AI was done in under a week. A few months of testing and scientists settled on N2116. The mineral reduces lithium use by 70%, and best of all, it comes from salt, one of the most common minerals on the planet 🧂 It’s one of the first times AI has supported a major discovery. In today’s roundup of digital policy news from Africa: 🇨🇳China: President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 aims to help the US meet climate goals by investing in renewables and EVs, while the EU's Critical Raw Materials Act aims to ease financing for mining projects and reduce Europe's dependence on Chinese suppliers. Both countries are also seeking supply deals and investment partnerships with other producing nations, with China consolidating relationships with African nations. However, China's first mover position gives it an advantage over the US🇺🇸  and the EU 🇪🇺. This is evident in Africa, with China owning more than half the cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in other critical mineral 💎 rich nations in the Global South.   African Union: The African Union’s 5th Ordinary Session Specialized Technical Committee on Communication and Information Communications Technology was held in Addis Ababa last week. Several important documents were deliberated and agreements were reached on Africa’s digital policy. They include: 1.
