I want to shed light on the reality of gig and platform work in India, challenging the perception that such work is merely temporary or casual. #Gig workers, such as those employed by #ride-hailing services like #Ola and #Uber, or #delivery platforms like #Swiggy and #Dunzo, operate without a traditional employer-employee relationship, working on demand and often without long-term security. A survey conducted by the #NGO Janpahal in March 2024 reveals that for many of these workers, gig work is far from temporary. Out of 5,220 respondents, 85% reported working more than eight hours a day, with 21% working over 12 hours daily. Furthermore, 57% of these workers had been in their roles for two to five years, indicating that gig work is a more stable, long-term occupation for a significant portion of workers than previously assumed. The situation highlights the growing reliance on gig work as a primary source of income for many in India, despite the lack of job security and benefits typically associated with full-time employment. The comparison to the Eagles' song "Hotel California" underscores the notion that while gig workers may appear to have flexibility, they often find themselves unable to leave these roles due to financial necessity.

Heat waves, health and productivity: How is heat impacting gig and platform workers' health? ❗ Around 52% of the surveyed workers reported experiencing heat exhaustion and 30% experienced a heat stroke. Despite this, only 47% reported receiving a medical diagnosis for their symptoms. We asked gig and platform workers if they were likely to miss work or work fewer hours than normal as a result of working in extreme heat. ❗ Nearly 49% of workers reported that working in very hot weather likely reduced their productivity. What about the other 51%? One explanation is that most respondents earned less than Rs 20,000 a month and simply could not afford to pause work because of heat. A gig worker said that reaching the customer’s location “on time” was of paramount importance regardless of the weather. As extreme heat worsens, it's in platform companies' interest to devise policies and tools to protect their partners from heat-related illnesses and even death. The 77-year-old had sparked a huge debate in the country when he suggested in October last year that India's work culture needs to change and that youngsters should be prepared to work for 70 hours a week. Explaining the comment, Mr. Murthy told India Today, "I used to work 85-90 hours a week till I retired. Working for extended periods beyond the usual 40-hour workweek can significantly increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Long work hours can lead to chronic stress, which can have a negative impact on the body over time. Studies have shown that those who work overtime may have increased body-mass index and alcohol consumption, which may lead to many other health problems. Putting in those long hours can also have a negative effect on your mental health. Spending more time at work and worrying about work increase your stress levels. Gig working is increasingly becoming the preferred way of employment worldwide. It is changing how to look at work itself. Gig working gives the option of choosing when, where and what a gig worker wants to work on. It frees them from the current convention of 9-5 job routines along with giving them almost full control of their work. Due to the obvious perks accessible, more people will inevitably move into the gig economy over time. By 2029-30, the gig market is projected to grow to 2.35 crore (23.5 million) workers. Notably, by 2029-30, gig workers are expected to account for 6.7% of the non-agricultural workforce and 4.1% of total livelihood in India. Start paying employees on per hour basis in India, like western countries. And, the entire debate of 70-hour work-week/80 hour work-week, will stop. Companies should stop expecting FREE work. Similarly: as employees/consumers, we should stop expecting FREE services. Reward merit. Learn to pay for other people's hard-work. And, get paid for your hard-work.

A dig at the Gig: Here's to challenges Faced by Gig Workers in the Digital Economy In the dynamic landscape of the gig economy, where platforms like app cabs, radio bikes, food delivery Apps and home delivery apps have become integral to our daily lives, it's crucial to shed light on the often unseen struggles faced by gig workers. Here's a video of one such Cabbie who represents the community 🚗Uncertain Income: Many gig workers grapple with the uncertainty of their earnings. Fluctuating demand and dynamic market conditions make it challenging for them to predict and plan their finances, leading to financial instability. Also their jobs often depend on customer ratings. How many customers even bother to give them a fair rating? Dynamic surge prices, that we often accuse them of, have nothing to do with them. 🏍️Minimal or No Benefits: Gig workers typically do not enjoy the benefits that come with traditional employment in many places such as PF, ESI, health insurance, paid leaves, or retirement plans. This absence of a safety net adds to the vulnerability of these workers, especially during unforeseen circumstances. ⌛ Exhausting Work Hours: The pressure to meet demand and earn a living can drive gig workers to put in long and exhausting hours. Balancing work-life becomes a constant struggle, impacting their overall well-being. During Diwali, Durga Puja or Christmas Cabbies often drive day night, Food Delivery men walking to doors every 5 mins to deliver food. 🍔Unholy customers: We, the people, who order stuff online all the time, have to become more humane to the gig workers. They drive through cold and rain, heavy traffics, surviving accidents, punctures, pandals to reach us. And we give them less ratings if the delivery is late. Making the Delivery man wait at the door for long, asking the security to lead them to avail stairs to reach the 10th floor so that the "30 mins, nahin to free" brings some extra slices of Pizza is not funny, it's immoral, unethical and inhuman. We need to be conscious that when the delivery is not on time, it is not the company who pays for that extra Pizza, it is the Delivery man who is paying for it as the money gets deducted from his salary. We need to be more conscious, more conscientious and aware of how freebies work. 👎 Lack of Job Security or laws: The new labour codes acknowledged them in the laws bout they have simply not been implemented. Gig workers lack job security. Their job tenure is often replaced by the transient nature of gig assignments, leaving them susceptible to sudden income gaps. During covid, lacs of such workers starved to their peril. As we celebrate the convenience of aggregator platforms, it's imperative to advocate for Sk Salauddin and the fair treatment of the 10 Mm gig workers in the Indian economy. Sustainable future needs fostering an equitable inclusive digital economy. Let's ensure that the gig economy works for everyone involved. #GigEconomy

Can gig workers temporarily be your main workforce? We had a client who expanded significantly a couple of years back. The company opened six business units and multiple offices across India. While expanding this rapidly, they also needed the workforce in a minimum timeframe to back all of it. But, hiring permanent staff for these newly opened locations would take them anywhere between 4 to 6 months. Now, time is really of the essence when you’re expanding as there are ‘n’ number of things happening such as: - 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: You're setting up systems from scratch or modifying existing ones to suit new locales. - 𝗛𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: You're scouting for local talent, which can be time-consuming and complex. - 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴: You're creating support structures complying with the new market dynamics. This often creates a significant gap between identifying a need and filling it permanently. So, rather than waiting at such a crucial time, we helped them hire multiple gig workers. Each bringing different skill sets, including hiring, process design, technology, and development. They onboarded those people within 7 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀, and the workforce kept them functioning during the entire hiring process. Once their new hires were ready to take up the job, the gig workers transitioned the work after completing their assignments. This example is just a fraction of what the gig economy offers.
