The chemical industry anticipate energy costs, skills shortages, and increases in labour costs and raw material prices as key challenges in 2024, says Ian Cranshaw, Head of International Trade and Regional Affairs at the Chemical Industries Association. At the latest CIRS Group Global Chemical Regulation Conference, Ian Cranshaw presented an overview of the challenges facing UK chemical companies, which gathered delegates from 21 countries. Chemical manufacturing is a foundation industry and thus critical in meeting the demands of Net Zero/ decarbonisation. Last February, the European Commission released the report ‘Guidance on EU Funding and the Transition Pathway for the Chemical Industry’. It highlights key funding opportunities for chemical companies transitioning to greener practices. 📌 In particular, Section 2.2.1 highlights the role of CBE JU in supporting the #biobased industries' transition. By fostering new synergies between the chemical industry and other sectors, we promote bio-based chemicals to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The CBE JU-funded AFTER-BIOCHEM #biorefinery, which repurposes sugar industry side streams, was spotlighted as a clear example of this progress. Its approach was recognised for significantly contributing to the EU’s green transition, driving sustainable growth. Slight upturn in EU chemical industry output, but challenges remain 🚨. Our latest #ChemicalTrends report is out 📢 Read online: https://lnkd.in/e8bCMGSm Since Q2 2023, the EU27 #ChemicalIndustry has experienced a modest recovery, with production improving for four consecutive quarters, showing signs of stability in 2024. Despite this, output levels are still far from pre-COVID highs, mainly due to weak demand and high energy costs. ⚠️ For sustained recovery, we need lower #EnergyPrices and stronger business confidence across the chemical industry 🌍. #EUManufacturing #BusinessOutlook #EconomicRecovery #IndustrialDeal
