Yesterday we hosted a panel discussion with Rotterdam Maritime Capital of Europe on the competitiveness of Maritime Europe. These were the key outcomes: The panel discussion addressed the competitiveness of the European maritime industry and the challenges it faces compared to global competitors. The participants highlighted several factors impacting Europe's competitiveness, including: - Fragmentation and lack of a unified European approach to regulations, policies, and investments - High energy and operating costs due to factors like taxation and emissions regulations - Difficulty translating innovation into manufacturing competitiveness compared to Asia and the US The panel explored potential solutions, such as: - Advocating for a more coordinated European maritime strategy and policies to support the industry - Leveraging EU funding mechanisms to invest in new technologies, infrastructure, and skills development - Fostering collaboration between stakeholders like shipowners, charterers, fuel suppliers, and policymakers - Focusing on niche markets like short-sea shipping where Europe can leverage its strengths Overall, the discussion emphasized the need for Europe to take a more proactive, collaborative, and innovative approach to maintain its global leadership in the maritime sector amidst increasing international competition. Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism: Implications for Certain Industries → The EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) will affect energy-intensive industries (EIIs) in terms of competitiveness, innovation, and sustainability. Energy guzzlers must adapt to this new reality. → by Lorne Michael Cousins The European Union (EU) has recently agreed to implement the world's first Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), a tariff on carbon-intensive products imported by the EU. The CBAM is part of the EU's ambitious Green Deal, which aims to make the EU climate-neutral by 2050. But what does the CBAM mean for energy-intensive industries (EIIs), such as steel, cement, chemicals, and aluminum? How will it affect their competitiveness, innovation, and sustainability? Let's explore the main features, benefits, and challenges of the CBAM for EIIs, and provide some insights for how businesses can quickly adapt to this new policy. What is the CBAM and how does it work? The CBAM is a policy tool that aims to prevent "carbon leakage", which oc... → Full Article: https://lnkd.in/gZTtrdvy #Corporate #Insight #Adaptation #Carbon #CarbonBorderAdjustmentMechanism #Clim...

The World Shipping Council (WSC) has welcomed the European Commission’s Competitiveness Compass, which balances sustainability with economic growth and forms the foundation for the EU’s Clean Industrial Deal. However, WSC is urging the Commission to recognize liner shipping’s investments in Europe and provide greater support in decarbonising supply chains while ensuring open trade and stable sea routes. https://lnkd.in/dBW6TgRU #shipping #maritime #europe #decarbonisation #supplychain

As a major player in global trade, the UK’s port industry is undergoing significant transformations. Some key trends shaping the future of the industry are: Global Trade & UK’s Role : With 95% of UK trade moving by sea, ports are critical to post-Brexit trade, connecting the UK to global markets. Decarbonisation : The push for net-zero emissions is driving investments in cleaner fuels, green infrastructure, and supporting the offshore wind industry. Integrated Logistics Hubs : Ports are evolving into logistics hubs, offering end-to-end services and improving supply chain efficiency through better connectivity. These trends are paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient maritime future! #GlobalTrade #UKPorts #Sustainability #Logistics #Innovation #Decarbonisation

We welcome the balance between sustainability and competitiveness struck in the European Commission’s Competitiveness Compass released today, that will form the basis for the EU’s Clean Industrial Deal. 🇪🇺 🚢 🌿 We call on the European Commission to recognise that liner shipping is investing in Europe and urged the them to support the sector on its path to decarbonise supply chains, fostering open trade and protecting critical sea lanes from geopolitical disruptions. “We are happy to see the Commission’s recognition that decarbonisation can drive competitiveness, and its commitment to intertwine it with EU economic, competition, and trade policies. This is the moment for Europe to seize the opportunity to support shipping in contributing to the competitiveness of a sustainable future EU economy," said WSC's Joe Kramek. #EU #Shipping #NetZero2050 Read our full media release here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eSkRcnhr

It’s encouraging to see the European Commission acknowledge the vital role of shipping, which transports around 90% of global goods and underpins our economic prosperity. We must embrace the most sustainable shipping practices possible, and do so urgently. With the United States facing at least four years of political setbacks—likely impossible to fully recoup—Europe should lead by example and demonstrate how genuine sustainability is achieved. I call on the European Commission and the International Maritime Organization to introduce bold, far-reaching measures without delay

On Tuesday at Shipping UK 2024, Transport Minister Louise Haigh pledged to put maritime decarbonisation at the centre of the UK’s economic growth, promising a new Clean Maritime Plan. The UK Chamber of Shipping’s £700 million roadmap, which includes essential investments in shore power, emissions reduction, and workforce training, was absent from the minister’s address. As a company committed to driving change at ports across the UK, we know how important this type of funding is to the speed of progress, and we hope to see more details in the near future. The industry urgently needs action if we are to meet the International Maritime Organization's target to decarbonise shipping by 2050. As Stefano said in Forbes, the shipping industry needs accelerators. The establishment of green corridors, coupled with collaboration with fleet operators, will act as the catalyst for fast industry-wide action. Real support, backed by clear policy and funding, is critical if the UK is to lead in sustainable shipping. While we await further details on the Clean Maritime Plan, it is clear that public-private collaboration will be key to unlocking the full potential of a clean, thriving maritime sector.
