A great relief that the #Heroes of #GalaxyLeader has been released after enduring extreme hardship and emotional turmoil for more than 14 months in the captivity of #Houthis. The atrocities and humiliation that the crew and the stress that their loved ones had to undergo during this is unimaginable. Constant fear of uncertainty, hopelessness and negative thoughts about coming days and weeks would have added a toll on their emotional and mental health. Who really lost our of this ? It's the Seafarers and their families are the worst affected. I fully agree many partners including shipping company, international organisations have been working behind the scenes to get the crew released soon but the sufferings that the crew and their families back at home had faced over the prolonged period, is totally irreplaceable and cannot be compensated. While it is welcome news that the crew are released now and will meet with their families soon but such incidents should never have occurred in the first place. Seafarers need a lot of support and emotional care after homecoming along with their families and am sure their company, who have been standing by the families throughout the horrific ordeal as well as partner welfare organisations and Government departments shall work together to provide a good response. BRP Teresa Magbanua, the largest cutter in the Philippine fleet, was involved in an altercation with Chinese Coast Guard vessel 5205 near Sabina Shoal—a contested area internationally recognized as within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The incident, which left the Philippine vessel damaged, highlights the ongoing struggle for control in this strategically important region. Both sides have released statements and evidence accusing the other of dangerous manoeuvres and deliberate collisions. This altercation is part of a broader pattern of confrontations in the South China Sea, where the Philippines continues to assert its presence against increasing Chinese pressure. The U.S. has reiterated its support for the Philippines, condemning the actions of the Chinese Coast Guard. As these tensions rise, the need for diplomatic dialogue and peaceful resolution becomes even more critical. The safety of personnel and the stability of the region are at stake. Denmark has arrested a Chinese ship suspected of having cut cables in the Baltic Sea. It is not the first time civilian ships have been suspected of cutting European cables, and it is not the last time ships will be arrested in Nordic waters. Here are the oil and gas pipelines that supply Western Europe, electricity cables and telecom cables that connect Scandinavia to the great grids. At the same time, Denmark control the straits where legal and sanctioned goods are being carried to and from Russia. Shadow tankers pass through without proper insurance, maintainance, or winter equipment. There is even legal possibilities in the Law of the Sea of denying ships carrying war-critical goods. It is just a question of time until Danish and Swedish navies may have their hands full with shadow and subversion ships ready to be arrested and inspected, possibly quarantined. Spain Bans Maersk Container Ship From Entering Algeciras Port A Maersk container ship has been blocked from entering the Spanish port of Algeciras, the Danish shipowner said today, refuting the presence of Israeli weapons in its cargo. "The cargo overflowing at the port does not contain military weapons or ammunition," said the Danish business group Maersk, in a statement. Two days earlier, in response to the newspaper El País, the Government of Spain explained that this container ship, as well as another also belonging to Maersk and which should dock at the end of the month, "will not make a stop in Spain" due, according to press, to the presence of Israeli weapons in its cargo. Since the spring of this year, Spain has been trying to rally other European capitals around the idea of recognizing a Palestinian state soon, refusing permission to dock in its ports for ships carrying a load of weapons destined for Israel. "To clarify future operations, we have consulted with Spanish authorities to understand why a cargo that is no different to previous cargoes was refused entry," shipping company Maersk said, noting that the cargo was not inspected. "We understand that Spain has changed its criteria on a discretionary basis and is now refusing ships carrying anything related to the army to or from Israel, even if that cargo is legal," he lamented. US court sentences Canadian to 40 months in prison for exporting electronics to Russia According to the agency, Nikolay Goltsev "masterminded a global procurement scheme on behalf of sanctioned Russian companies, including Russian military companies" NEW YORK, January 9/ A court in the Eastern District of New York State has sentenced Canadian citizen Nikolay Goltsev to three years and four months in prison for allegedly illegally exporting electronic equipment to Russia, the US Justice Department reported. According to the agency, Goltsev "masterminded a global procurement scheme on behalf of sanctioned Russian companies, including Russian military companies." The technology, exported through front companies in India, Turkey, China and the United Arab Emirates, was allegedly used to produce Russian missiles and drones used in the Ukrainian conflict, among other things. Earlier, charges in the case were also brought against Goltsev's wife, Kristina Puzyreva, and Salimdzhon Nasriddinov, who holds Russian and Tajik citizenship. In July 2024, Puzyreva was sentenced to two years in prison for laundering funds obtained by sending drone components to sanctioned Russian companies; Nasriddinov's sentence has not yet been handed down. #business #finance #financialservices
