Azerbaijan has gained unchallenged legitimacy despite its murderous acts as successive US Departments of State (DOS), of different US admins, have looked the other way as the ‘Final Solution’ is gradually applied on the Armenians in the region. https://lnkd.in/gt_dZVjZ The contents of Aliyev’s national speeches and its implementation thus far are bone chilling. Despite Aliyev’s authoritarian and anti-Armenian racist regime, Azerbaijan is regarded of value as an imp strategic partner of Israel (1) by meeting 40% of Israel’s energy needs via Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline and (2) by leveraging Azerbaijan’s strategic location and allowing for espionage, if not full-fledged operations, against the Islamic republic of Iran. It would be helpful if the US DOS asserts to President Aliyev that the ‘pro-western’ choices Azerbaijan makes are for its own good and do not provide a permission to racially subjugate & demonize Armenians or illegally torture, mutilate and hold Armenians captive. Or, for that matter, invade Armenia proper and speak of Armenia as Western Azerbaijan in his national speeches. It would be helpful if US DOS, this one time, states to President Aliyev that the US expects Armenia has the right to defend herself.
During the House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Analyzing the Fiscal Year 25 State and Foreign Operations Budget Request for Europe, Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. (R-NJ) asked Assistant Secretary James O’Brien to provide a clear message to President Aliyev that “there will be consequences for any future threats or aggression against Armenia."

💬 "This is a crucial period for decisions on the future of the European Union, its role in the world and its image in the eyes of EU citizens," the Vice-Minister Simonas Satunas said during the General Affairs Council in Luxembourg. This week, #EU 🇪🇺 leaders are due to approve a new EU Strategic Agenda, which will set out the key objectives for the next five years. 💬 "Ukraine's victory is a key element of the EU's success, as it would bring peace back to Europe and lead to greater prosperity for EU citizens, which is why it is imperative that the EU's support to Ukraine is even stronger," said Šatūnas. 📌 Lithuania is also committed to a rapid and successful EU enlargement process. Following the GAC meeting, the Intergovernmental Conferences with #Ukraine 🇺🇦 and #Moldova 🇲🇩 are leading to real negotiations on EU membership for these countries. The Vice-Minister stressed that the start of the negotiations is a strong sign of encouragement to the Ukrainian people, as well as a commitment by the EU to welcome the country into its ranks once the necessary reforms have been implemented. 💬 "Today, military support is extremely important for Ukraine, but it is also very important to be close to the citizens of Ukraine with real actions and to respond to their desire to become a European country, which is exactly what they are fighting for," emphasised Vice-Minister Šatūnas. 📌 Lithuania is following the situation in #Georgia 🇬🇪 with concern and urges the government to immediately repeal the so-called "foreign agents" law, which prevents the country from seeking EU membership. NEW ARTICLE: "Engagement against All Odds? Navigating Member States’ Contestation of EU Policy on #Kosovo" Disagreements between European Union (EU) member states constrain the Union’s capacity to manage conflicts such as Kosovo-Serbia. While Kosovo has long received EU support, five EU member states do not recognise its independence. How does the EU manage to work around member states’ vetoes and mitigate contestation? In contrast to previous scholarship, the analysis of the EU enlargement process and visa liberalisation, the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue and the EULEX mission illustrate how institutional, technical and diplomatic solutions have allowed the provision of support to Kosovo, despite internal disagreements. EU member states have delegated to EU institutions the responsibility of overseeing day-to-day conflict management and integration policies concerning Kosovo and Serbia. EU institutions also use technical and constructively ambiguous language to manage conflicts and navigate the absence of political consensus regarding Kosovo’s statehood. Additionally, the EU has fostered diplomatic collaboration with the United States (US) and with actors from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to navigate through the Kosovo-Serbia conflict.
NEW ARTICLE: "Engagement against All Odds? Navigating Member States’ Contestation of EU Policy on #Kosovo" (Pol Bargues, Gergana Noutcheva and Assem Dandashly) published in the International Spectator for the JOINT Horizon research project ❌ The EU member states are said to be increasingly divided on foreign and security policy. Kosovo seems a case in point with 5/27 member states (still) not recognising the country for purely domestic politics ❓ And yet, Kosovo has long received EU support with ambitious enlargement, diplomatic and security policies. How does the EU manage to work around member states’ vetoes and mitigate contestation? 🗣 Based on 36 interviews in Brussels, Pristina, Belgrade, Athens, and Madrid, we illustrate how (a) institutional, (b) technical and (c) diplomatic solutions have allowed the provision of EU support to Kosovo, despite internal disagreements ➡ https://lnkd.in/eEbyYj6q

📢 🇧🇪🇪🇺 The Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU is halfway! ⤵️ WATCH the press conference below. Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and Minister of Foreign Affairs Hadja Lahbib gave an overview of the results of the #BelgianPresidency halfway through its tenure. Minister Lahbib highlighted the two main initial challenges: first, to finalize as many legislative proposals as possible, and secondly, to contribute to the strategic agenda to reshape and to reform the EU and prepare for the future. As legendary consensus builder, Belgium, together with its European partners, was able to finalize no less than 67 legislative proposals, a number that exceeds all expectations. Those impactful agreements include areas such as media freedom, strengthening the rule of law, human trafficking, violence against women, investments in critical technologies, net-zero industry, migration and asylum, cyber security, AI, Money Market Funds regulation, climate change, and green deal initiatives. Minister Lahbib explained Belgium’s priorities regarding the current geopolitical circumstances, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. Prime Minister De Croo focused on the future of Europe and emphasized the success factors to keep the implementation of the #EuropeanGreenDeal on track: an ambitious competitiveness agenda and strong political support. He also addressed the upcoming #EuropeanElections (early June) and the serious concerns due to Russian interference networks, the actions to fight them as well as their propaganda. For the second part of its Presidency, Belgium remains fully committed to work hand in hand with its partners to build a stronger and resilient EU. https://lnkd.in/egfiCtwH, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Belgium, Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024, Delegation of the European Union to the United States, Jean-Arthur Régibeau, Consulate General of Belgium in New York, Consulate General of Belgium in Los Angeles, Consulate General of Belgium in Atlanta, Hendrik Van de Velde, Sophie Karlshausen, Filip Vanden Bulcke, Sophie Hottat, Michel Gerebtzoff
