This is how PathFinder Health has performed their annual checkups. The labs are first so the doctor can focus on any trouble areas that arise. How can I live in perfect peace when so much evil surrounds me? That is the question we are all asking today. If you are reading or listening to the news, the stress of being aware of what is happening is enough to make one sick (literally). The Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States estimates that stress accounts for about 75% of all doctor’s visits. Occupational Health and Safety News and the National Council on Compensation of Insurance find that up to 90% of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress-related complaints. Stress wrecks our entire body According to this Healthline.com article, stress causes headaches, depression, heartburn, insomnia, rapid breathing, weakened immune system, risk of heart attack, high blood sugar, fertility problems, stomachache, erectile dysfunction, low sex drive, missed periods, and tense muscles. The Reader's Digest article “What Stress Does to Your Body” (Feb. 2024) goes on to describe these results of stress: A chemical rush of cortisol, adrenaline and norepinephrine. These hormones can destroy neurons, leading to brain atrophy, shrinkage or damage to the prefrontal cortex. "Being physically and mentally healthy is important as a physician because you need to be healthy to provide quality care for your patients," says John Shufeldt, MD, JD, MBA, FACEP. "Patients expect their medical professionals to 'be on' and to have their full attention. If you are tired or do not feel your best, you will not be focused on your patients, which could lead to problems. Reflecting on my own journey, I recall a time when visits to the doctor were few and far between, and the significance of preventative care meant nothing to me. As men, as we navigate through life, various responsibilities and societal norms may impede our focus on our well-being. The excuse list grows as we age: family commitments, demanding careers, and perhaps a skepticism towards traditional medicine. However, neglecting routine health checkups and screenings can inadvertently shorten our lifespan. The influence of "masculinity norms" often perpetuates a hesitancy among men to seek medical attention, especially preventive care. When compounded with racial disparities, men of color face additional challenges in prioritizing their health. It's crucial to acknowledge that by obtaining the knowledge of healthy living practices and fostering the resolve to act upon it, we have the power to avert numerous health issues. By proactively addressing our health needs, we not only empower ourselves but also set a positive example for those around us. 𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗘𝗝𝗢𝗕 𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗦 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞 𝟯𝟵/𝟱𝟮 Every day, the shortage of healthcare practitioners become increasingly glaring. The patient-to-doctor ratio becomes increasingly imbalanced, making the provision of health care not only inadequate, but potentially dangerous. In the clinics, only a specific number of patients can be seen weekly, those who do not make the list have to come back at a later time, thus the number of people who don’t get to see the doctor increases with each appointment. In the face of an ongoing but currently subtle health crisis, I’ve listed a few approaches that people who seek health care services from a doctor can take: →This is not the time to be rude and impatient at a doctor's appointment! Your doctor is probably taking on the work load of at least 3 other people, and cannot afford extra emotional stress from the people he/she is sworn to care for. → This is the time to pay more attention during your doctor's appointment: This also applies to those who accompany relatives to the hospital. Keep a note of what the doctor said the last time, medications, investigations, ask questions to clarify as much as possible. → Prioritize your health: Now, more than ever, you must adopt the habits that preserve your health for the long term, this is not the period to be careless about what you eat, as well as other health choices you make. In the end, while delivering quality health care is the responsibility of your healthcare providers, you must learn to prioritize your health and be mindful of it too.
