A good initiative which brings about a virtuous cycle. Good engineers exercise and create good practices. Good practices (and good environments) make people feel appreciated and growing. It fosters a growth mindset that welcomes constructive change. People feeling appreciated and showing growth attracts other good engineers. Good engineers inspire even better engineers. Now, replace the word 'engineers' with any other vocation, and you'll probably realize the same rule applies for most cases. It all starts with good initiative.

Staff Engineer. Building joinTaro.com to help engineers find career success. Taro, Meta, Pinterest, Stanford.

Be the person who makes things easier, not harder This is the common trait of the best engineers I've worked with across my decade at Meta, Pinterest, and Stanford. Every time you interact with these engineers, you walk away feeling like they moved the ball forward in a helpful way: • They quickly unblock code reviews and launches • They help onboard and educate newer developers • They work within constraints to deliver quality work Making things easier doesn't mean that you simply agree to everything. These engineers still maintain coding standards, advocate for strategy changes, and share constructive feedback. The difference is that instead of simply saying "no", they say: "No, but let me help you fix it. Here are some resources, and here's what I'd do."
