Geographical Indications (GIs) are more than just intellectual property rights— they stand at the intersection of tradition and innovation, preserving cultural heritage while fostering economic and creative progress. Contributing €75 billion annually to the European economy and accounting for over 15% of EU food and drink exports, their significance cannot be overstated. This week, in cooperation with the European Commission, we had the honour of hosting the Geographical Indications Conference 2025: “Safeguarding Our Heritage, Cultivating Our Future”. With over 2000 participants joining in person and online, this was the largest event we have ever hosted in Alicante—a clear reflection of the growing significance and impact of GIs. I was truly impressed by the quality of discussions and the depth of expertise gathered over these two days. I was especially struck by the contributions of GI producers and manufacturers—both in agricultural GIs and craft and industrial GIs—whose participation in the exhibitions alongside the conference was an integral part of its success. This brought the discussions to life, showcasing the real-world impact of GIs. Collaboration and dialogue are essential, and it is through the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and best practices that we can build a stronger, more harmonised GI framework that benefits both producers and consumers across the EU. As Marion Walsmann, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Legal Affairs in the European Parliament and former rapporteur on CIGIs, aptly said in her keynote speech: “Nobody knows everything, but everybody knows something.” Events like these ones are excellent occasions to share ideas and perspectives and chart a path forward in this important area. As we prepare to open applications on 1 December as part of our new competence in Craft and Industrial GIs, we remain fully committed to continued dialogue and cooperation with all relevant stakeholders to shape the future of GIs together. A heartfelt thank you to: ▪️ Christophe Hansen, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, European Commission ▪️ Marion Walsmann, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Legal Affairs, European Parliament, and former rapporteur on CIGIs ▪️ Monika Krzepkowska, Ambassador of Poland in Spain and representative of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU ▪️ Martine Pinville, Alternate in the Committee of Regions and former rapporteur on CIGIs ▪️ Kerstin Jorna, Director-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, European Commission I am also deeply grateful to all the panel leaders, speakers, and participants, as well as the many GI producers and manufacturers who shared their expertise and insights. A special thanks to everyone behind the scenes whose hard work and dedication made this conference possible. Your dedication and collaboration are what drive the GI system forward. #GeographicalIndications #GIs #IP #Sustainability #LocalHeritage #Innovation #EUTrade
