With England reaching the sharp end of UEFA EURO 2024 (thank you, Jude) and Wimbledon starting this week, the back pages have been dominated by events in Germany and SW19. However, with the Opening Ceremony just over three weeks away, the #Paris2024 Olympics (and Paralympics thereafter) will soon take centre stage. Hosting the world’s largest multi-sport international event inevitably presents logistical and operational challenges, with some 10,500 athletes from over 200 nations due to compete across 32 Olympic sports (and circa 4,400 athletes in 22 Paralympic sports). When you throw in the existing geo-political climate, medical/environmental considerations and the pursuit of many athletes to reach the pinnacle of competition, it is inevitable that lawyers will be involved (to some extent). In this first article, I examine some of the key legal issues/controversies that have dominated the build-up to the Paris Games, including: ▶ The participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes; ▶ Athlete selection and qualification; ▶ Para-athlete classification; ▶ Transgender and DSD athletes; and ▶ The environmental impact and sustainability of the Games. Olympic Disappointment 🤔 I did wonder why there were less sports than ever on the red button. Turns out the BBC doesn't have the primary access rights anymore. Discovery+ and Eurosport are the primary rights holders in the UK, offering comprehensive live and on-demand coverage. Where as the BBC has a limited range of sports on catch up on the red button. Don't get me wrong, it's been a great watch so far. But I do worry about the sports that don't get coverage and the impact that it has on those sports and the impact that has on kids potentially trying new and different activities. Sports with longer competitions and those without British medal hopefuls are less likely to be shown. As someone who plays a minority sport (badminton), it is a worrying sign for a sport that has already been through so much after COVID-19. Very few sport provisions, funding and support are available for these sports and with many of them not owning their own facilities, the cost of keeping them going is huge. #Olympics #Paris2024 #BBC #TeamGB https://lnkd.in/eSCKk2Se

Here are some of the key highlights: 🎉 Ceremonies: The opening ceremony was a historic event, with the parade of nations taking place along the Seine River—a first in Olympic history. Over 600,000 spectators lined the riverbanks, making it one of the most attended Olympic ceremonies ever. The closing ceremony at the Stade de France was a fitting grand finale, where 71,500 attendees witnessed a stunning artistic display, including a tribute to the athletes and the 45,000 volunteers who played a crucial role in the Games' success. 🏟️ Sporting Venues: Paris utilised a mix of historic and temporary venues to host the events. Notable venues included the iconic Stade de France for athletics, the Champs-Élysées and Place de la Concorde for skateboarding and BMX, and the historic Grand Palais for fencing and taekwondo. The only new, permanent structure was the Paris Olympic Aquatic Centre in Saint-Denis. 🔐 Accreditation Challenges: Managing accreditation for over 11,000 athletes and millions of spectators across various historic and temporary venues was an immense undertaking. Despite the complexity, the accreditation process was handled with remarkable efficiency, ensuring smooth and secure access for all participants throughout the Games. This successful management was pivotal in facilitating the seamless operation of events and maintaining the high standards expected of the Olympic Games. As we look forward to the next Olympics in Los Angeles, the successes of Paris 2024 will surely influence how future Games are organised. As Paris passes the torch to Los Angeles for the 2028 Summer Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has already made significant adjustments to the event schedule. In 2023, the IOC approved proposals for five new sports at the 2028 Olympics, some of which — including lacrosse and cricket — haven’t been seen at the Games for over 100 years. As of August 2024, these five sports have been officially approved for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Cricket The most popular sport of cricket appeared only once at the Paris Olympics in 1900 and will make a grand return in 2028. The format to be played in Los Angeles will be Twenty20 (T20). “LA28’s proposed sports ignite the imagination on the field of play and drive culture off it. Simply Sensational Stuff !!! Since the 1960s, every city hosting the Olympics exceeded its initial budget by a large margin, according to an Oxford University study. But this time, a different story is taking shape. Spending at the 2024 Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024 is expected to come in at under $10 billion — only about 25% over the initial budget, according to an S&P Global Ratings report. In sharp contrast, the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro and 2020 Games in Tokyo deviated from their original budgets by more than 350% and 280%, respectively, the report said. The chief advantage this time can be summed up in two words: existing infrastructure. About 95% of the venues slated for use during the Paris Olympics existed prior to the city's winning bid to host the Games, according to the S&P Global Ratings report.
