🌱 Delving into impactful environmental research! Our e-Fate team is deeply immersed in a ground-breaking project to develop an OECD - OCDE guideline for Plant Uptake Factor (PUF) studies. 🌿 Since 2014, we've actively contributed to discussions, trials, and the latest round of ring trials presented at Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) The PUF, a pivotal parameter, assesses a plant's potential to take up substances from soil pore water, preventing leaching into groundwater and influencing exposure and regulatory decisions. 🌏 Our team has conducted commercial PUF studies in accordance with evolving guidelines. 🔍 Currently, the focus is on the Transpiration Stream Concentration Factor (TSCF), a vital metric in environmental fate models, playing a crucial role in simulating plant uptake and influencing regulatory risk assessments. 📈 The project's goal? To provide technical guidance on evaluating substances' potential uptake via root systems into above-ground plant parts. The round-robin test ensures reproducibility across different labs. Stay tuned as we delve deeper into this pivotal research! 🌐🌿 Read more about our work ➡ https://hubs.ly/Q02h-hmM0 #EnvironmentalResearch #efate #OECDGuidelines

HCF Panel 1: How does the new Global Framework on Chemicals influence the global supply chains to manage chemicals safer during the whole product lifecycle? The new Global Framework on Chemicals was adopted at the end of September 2023 in Bonn. This ambitious new Framework, successor to SAICM, provides all stakeholders, from governments, international agencies to the private sector and civil society with an ambitious vision: a Planet Free of Harm from Chemicals and Waste. Collaboration will be key for the successful implementation of the new Framework – including within the global value chains – and this need is well acknowledged and reflected within its strategic objectives. The panel will explore the role of the new Global Framework on Chemicals in shaping global supply chains for the safer management of chemicals throughout their lifecycle. The panelists will also share their perspectives on the importance of collaboration and a unified approach to ensure the accomplishment of the new Framework’s vision. ◾ What are the main lessons leant from the experience in the implementation of the new Framework’s predecessor (SAICM) or other global instruments and initiatives, that could be useful in scaling up or as part of the basis for the implementation of the new Framework, especially with regard to the engagement and influence of value chains? ◾ How does the new Framework take into account the need for cooperation within the global value chains, and can it serve as a roadmap for them with regard to the sound management of chemicals and waste? What kind of partnerships would be more effective and help to achieve impact at global level? ◾ What have so far been the main challenges in the value chains’ involvement and what would be necessary, in concrete terms, to enhance their involvement and action? Which elements of the new Global Framework on Chemicals can help addressing these challenges? What benefits or added value would there be for the value chains? ◾ How can other stakeholders outside the value chains, contribute to or support this process? 📅 On 10 April 2024 🕑 2 – 3.30 PM Get your live conference pass or online conference pass 👉 https://lnkd.in/dHA_5mvF #hcf #helsinkichemicalsforum #chemicalssafety #globalframework #chemicalindustry #chemistryeducation #chemistry

🟢 Join ECHA in bridging the gap between science and regulation! 💡 In its Strategy 2024-2028, the European Chemicals Agency has set a vision for the next five years, prioritizing protecting the health and the environment. The strategy emphasizes chemical safety through science, collaboration, and knowledge. One key goal is to lead on chemical knowledge and expertise, with a strong focus on building partnerships and stimulating innovation in chemical safety. As part of this initiative, ECHA has identified key regulatory challenges and outlined its research needs under the European Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals (PARC). These needs, updated for 2024, include: 🔬 developing new approach methods, 🔬identifying and regulating bioaccumulative substances, and 🔬shifting away from animal testing. Researchers and experts are encouraged to align their work with ECHA’s outlined needs, contributing to a safer and more competitive EU chemical market. ECHA’s map of key regulatory challenges, first published in 2023, serves as a guide for researchers to develop relevant and impactful research. 👉 If you have ongoing research that aligns with these needs or if you’re interested in collaborating, contact ECHA at ✉️ PARC@echa.europa.eu. Together, we can advance chemical safety and innovation! #ECHA #Chemical #Innovation #Regulatory #Science #PARC #Sustainability #Environmental #Protection #health #Safety #research #Collaboration

European Exposure Science Strategy 2020–2030 Aims to Enhance Chemical Policy Across the EU In a concerted effort to bolster chemical safety and environmental protection, the EU has embarked on an ambitious journey outlined in the European Exposure Science Strategy 2020–2030. Central to this strategy is the heightened utilisation of exposure science, aimed at comprehensively understanding the impacts of chemical substances on human health and the environment. As policymakers strive for more effective chemical regulation, the integration of exposure science emerges as a crucial component for informed decision-making. Exposure science, a multidisciplinary field encompassing environmental health, toxicology, and risk assessment, provides valuable insights into the routes, levels, and duration of human and environmental exposure to various chemicals. By leveraging advanced methodologies and cutting-edge technologies, exposure scientists can evaluate the potential risks associated with chemical substances, facilitating evidence-based policy development and regulatory decision-making. The European Exposure Science Strategy 2020–2030 emphasizes the incorporation of exposure science principles across a spectrum of EU chemical policies, spanning from the registration and evaluation of chemicals under the REACH regulation to the management of hazardous substances under the CLP regulation. By integrating exposure science methodologies into these frameworks, policymakers aim to enhance the identification, assessment, and mitigation of chemical risks, ultimately safeguarding public health and the environment. One of the primary objectives of the strategy is to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among scientists, policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the public. By fostering partnerships and promoting transparency, the EU endeavors to bridge the gap between scientific research and regulatory decision-making, ensuring that policies are grounded in the latest scientific evidence and societal values. The adoption of the European Exposure Science Strategy 2020–2030 represents a significant milestone in the EU's ongoing efforts to strengthen chemical management and advance public health and environmental sustainability. By harnessing the power of exposure science, policymakers can make informed decisions that protect both current and future generations from the adverse effects of hazardous chemicals. As the implementation of the strategy unfolds, stakeholders across academia, industry, and civil society must collaborate closely to ensure its success. With collective efforts and a steadfast commitment to science-based policymaking, the EU can pave the way for a safer and more sustainable future for all. https://lnkd.in/dJemaKip

Last week the Association for the Advancement of Alternatives Assessment (A4) hosted a special session on the connections between alternatives assessment and the emerging field of Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) at the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Europe Annual Meeting. Both are critical to the design, evaluation, and adoption of safer, more sustainable chemicals. While one is focused on responding to increasing regulatory and market demands for safer chemistry, the other helps shape the design and application of solutions where safer alternatives may not exist today. Both require better collaboration between chemists and engineers with environmental and health scientists. And both need policies that support innovation, adoption, and scale of more sustainable solutions - which is of critical importance to Change Chemistry (formerly Green Chemistry & Commerce Council (GC3)).
