Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)are a family of synthetic chemicals used globally in various industries and consumer products like nonstick cookware, water-repellent clothing, and firefighting foams. These 'Forever Chemicals' have been linked to serious health conditions such as cancer, immunodeficiency and developmental issues in infants. Stockholm Convention recognises some PFAS such as PFOA, PFHxS and PFOS as Persistent Organic Pollutants. ALL PFAS ARE EQUAL, BUT SOME ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS (adapted from George Orwell) PFAS, a vast group of more than 14’000 substances, are a hot topic these days. In most publications the authors refer to PFAS, as if all PFAS are equal. They are not! The only common property of all PFAS, per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances, is their structural definition: “chemicals that have at least two adjacent carbon atoms, where one carbon is fully fluorinated and the other is at least partially fluorinated” (EPA, 2021). No other chemical or physical property is found in all PFAS! ·  Many are persistent, but not all. ·  Some are toxic, but many are not. ·  Some might have other negativ health effects, but not all. ·  Some are mobile, but fluoropolymers are not. Despite these differences, regulators, politicians, journalists and scientists treat them generally as if all PFAS are equal just because they belong the same group. Let’s make a comparison to mushrooms. There are more than 10’000 mushrooms, and they all belong to the group of mushrooms. Some of them are toxic. So, let’s ban all mushrooms of this world including penicillin and Camembert. Obviously, that makes no sense – so why apply this approach to PFAS? FEC is fully supporting restrictions on substances that pose a risk to the user or to the environment. FEC is also supporting grouping if this is done appropriately. Grouping 14’000 PFAS is not appropriate. Therefore, FEC demands a major revision of the European draft of a PFAS restriction with exemption of fluoropolymers. #fecassociation #PFAS #PTFE #cookware

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐅𝐀𝐒 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐥: 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐧   It has been one year since the universal PFAS restriction proposal was published by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). By this point, ECHA should have published the draft scientific and socio-economic opinions for a 60-day consultation.  However, the agency announced the assessment will take longer than usual, due to the high complexity of the file. Other regions of the world, such as New Zealand and several US states, are charging ahead with PFAS restrictions in various consumer products.
