My last article for ENDS Europe, exploring why concern about eternal pollutants continues to grow in Europe. "Almost 16 million Europeans are estimated to suffer from pathologies caused by exposure to eternal pollutants or #PFAS. Due to their grease and water resistant properties, PFAS are used in various everyday products, from cookware to clothing and cosmetics. Yet, despite the displayed causality between PFAS and immune, hormonal and reproductive diseases, these substances still lack proper European regulation. (...) Following several scandals and the identification of at least 17.000 sites contaminated with PFAS across Europe, five countries (Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden) submitted an ambitious restriction proposal to the European Chemicals Agency in February 2023. The goal: limiting the production and use of thousands of PFAS. If it were to be adopted in 2025, this restriction would then enter into force in 2026 or 2027. Yet, though several alternative substances and solutions to prevent PFAS water spilling exist, implementing them requires significant #investments on the part of industrial groups, which are in turn spending around 14 billions annually to push back blackout deadlines and obtain derogations. Health and environmental organizations are hence in a tug-of-war with industrials, to make sure the proposal is not softened, limit #derogations and eventually obtain financial #compensation for the victims." ⤵

PFAS, or forever chemicals, are a group of thousands of chemicals with a structure that is extremely difficult to break down. PFAS have been present in hundreds of applications since the 1940s. At least 97% of Americans tested had detectable levels of PFAS in their bodies. Early research indicates these substances may be linked to serious health issues including cancer, suppressed immune responses, hormone disruption, and more. Cleaning up forever chemicals is happening slowly but surely through legislation and regulation on the federal and state levels.
