Today is Creativity #inday at LinkedIn, a day where we are meant to stretch our creative energy and consider new ideas, so I wanted to share one that Murad Wadhwania pointed out to me about a year ago-- the first team. The TLDR (but see the longer intro here: https://lnkd.in/exkB9F26) is that very often leaders focus on THEIR team (their direct reports) as their 'first team.' This, while it can create a supportive environment, can lead to silos, balkanization, and lack of collaboration towards organizational goals. I recommend asking yourself, who is the group with whom your collaboration can drive the greatest impact?

In our VOE Events , I emphasized building trust to be very important. The team seem to care less about that. There’s a lot of fierce in-fighting between team members. There’s this sense of I am better than you that runs through the team. This is supported by the manager. I know trust can not be built that way . What can be done to bring the team back together. First Team Concept For Executives : First team concept introduces by Patrick Lencioni commands that leaders should extend their primary allegiance to the executive team that they are memeber of rather than to the subdivisions teams they personally manage. This is often a difficult proposition for many leaders because they see it as being disloyal to their direct reports. However, if every member of an executive team is more concerned about how decisions will impact their own group rather than the overall organization, it is inevitable that collective decision–making will suffer.

Van Kooten en de Bie, legendary Dutch comedians, had a knack for exposing praatjesmakers – those who engage in empty talk and hold seemingly pointless jobs. Their satire made us laugh, but it also made us think critically about the real value of our work. In leadership, it's crucial to go beyond superficial chatter. It's about understanding the true needs of your team and recognizing the importance of every role. By caring genuinely about your team members, listening to their concerns, and valuing their contributions, you create a supportive and productive environment. Let’s take a page from Van Kooten en de Bie’s book and focus on meaningful actions over empty words. When leaders show they care, it drives engagement, boosts morale, and enhances overall performance. During a recent team session, I held a gridiron (American football) in my hand, drawing parallels between the game and high-performing teams in business, referencing one of my favourite films, Remember the Titans. Just like in the movie, teamwork, resilience, and strong leadership are key to success—both on the field and in the sales world. It's not just about individual brilliance; it's about how each person works together, trusts one another, and communicates effectively to achieve a common goal. In sales, just like in football, we all play different positions, but it’s the coordination, shared vision, and commitment to the team’s success that takes us over the finish line.
