What did we achieve for animals in 2023?
Last year was a rollercoaster for European #AnimalAdvocacy with big ups and downs.
Among the ups we saw:
🦊 The very successful ECI #FurFreeEurope, signed by over 1.5 million EU citizens in less than one year!
🐭 An important step forward for animals in science, as the European Commission announced plans to create a roadmap for the transition to a non-animal science.
🐍 An important step to tackle the growing trade in exotic animals taken by the European Commission, which has committed to conduct a feasibility study on the introduction of a European-wide Positive List.
🐶 😺 A milestone legislation - first of its kind - for the protection of cats and dogs.
Take a look at our annual report to learn more about the progress we, together with our 90-plus members, have achieved for animals: bit.ly/45mD1Wc
Sadly, 2023 did not look as good for farm animals, who have been let down by EU institutions, despite the increasing call for higher standards from Europeans.
❌ The European Commission did not deliver on its commitment to ban cages.
❌ The existing outdated animal welfare legislation was not revised.
❌ A new Transport Regulation was put forward, but it's looking far from ambitious and continues to leave vulnerable animals to suffer.
However, this huge setback do not discourage us. Our movement is going from strength to strength, and the fierce resistance we encountered only made us stronger and ready to keep on fighting until we have created a Europe that genuinely respects and values animals as sentient beings.
A big thank you goes out to our members, to our incredible team, to all the MEPs who fought alongside us for legislative progress and, of course, to our funders who are making it all possible.
