Kenya is set to host the International Energy Agency’s World Energy Efficiency Conference from May 21 to 23, a milestone moment as Africa hosts this global event for the first time. The conference underscores Kenya's commitment to transitioning towards energy efficiency, aiming to provide affordable and sustainable energy solutions. Despite energy efficiency often being overlooked in sustainable energy discussions, the Energy and Petroleum Authority (EPRA) of Kenya has been at the forefront of championing this cause, setting a standard for energy conservation practices. Energy efficiency, fundamentally, involves using less energy to perform the same task, thereby eliminating energy waste. This concept is not only applicable to household lighting but extends to industrial, commercial, and institutional settings. By adopting energy-efficient practices, such as switching to LED lighting, consumers and businesses can significantly reduce energy consumption without compromising service quality. In a significant move towards enhancing global energy efficiency, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has introduced a toolkit in collaboration with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) under the Mission Efficiency initiative. The UNIDO toolkit provides Ghana with comprehensive support for enhancing energy efficiency in Ghana while optimizing its energy-saving potential within the transport sector. By leveraging this toolkit, Ghana can identify priority areas for energy efficiency, access tailored resources such as guides and model regulations, and engage with relevant partners for collaboration. This approach aligns with Ghana's goals to meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the 2030 Agenda, fostering a more sustainable and efficient transport sector. Over the coming decades, Kenya 🇰🇪 is likely to see a large increase in electricity demand driven by economic growth and wider electrification of different sectors. At the same time, Kenya remains committed to maintaining its high share of renewable generation. Results from the study show the effectiveness of the methodology in identifying critical grid issues that would have been missed by the capacity expansion model alone, especially in the case of higher penetration of non-dispatchable sources. EEP Africa Market Survey Report is out 🎉🎉 In connection to the 2023 call for proposals, EEP Africa conducted a brief #marketsurvey for the applicants. The survey covered seven technology focus areas: productive uses of energy, residential electricity access, clean cooking, mobility, mini-grids, power generation, and energy efficiency & storage. The report shows, among other things, that 🌍 businesses are looking to set themselves apart by piloting new technologies and business models that increase affordability for the customers in the clean energy sector. 🌍 profitability trends vary across the technologies and countries with the mini-grid sector being perceived as the most lucrative investment. 🌍 78 % of the respondents identified financing gaps in their markets with the clean cooking sector facing the largest financing gap. 🌍 global supply chain constraints and high import costs impact all seven technology sectors. Global investments in renewable energy reached $382 billion this year, but only 3% of that was invested in Africa, leaving a significant funding gap hindering the green transition and energy access on the continent. With just 48% of the African population having access to electricity, experts believe that strategic investments in the continent's renewable energy sector could fast-track green transition efforts and significantly expand electricity access. However, private sector reluctance remains a significant roadblock. Rebekah Shirley, WRI's deputy regional director, emphasizes the critical need to mobilize investors for Africa's green transition, highlighting the funding gap that persists despite pressing energy access challenges. Limited incentives for private sector investors, a lack of political will for appropriate legislation, and insufficient sensitization of lawmakers on prioritizing renewable energy projects, particularly in rural areas, are identified as challenges. Moreover, the shortage of skilled talent in Africa remains a hurdle for investors.
