Investment bankers are changing their fee structures to safeguard and boost M&A revenues as large deals face increased regulatory challenges. Instead of getting paid after a transaction closes, advisers at major U.S. banks are pressing clients to get paid even if a deal is blocked by regulators, while increasing service fees generally, according to Reuters. Increased economic protectionism from both sides of the political aisle has also become a growing risk to cross-border deals in politically sensitive industries like tech and manufacturing. Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley are asking clients to pay as much as 25% of the breakup fee on some transactions depending on their size, up from the historic average of 15%, according to dealmakers Reuters spoke to.
