#EuroNatur Rivers are more than energy 🌍 One of #Europe's largest reservoirs #Skavica is planned to be created in north-eastern #Albania for hydropower generation. It would be a sad record for humanity and biodiversity. What would be lost is not only much of the historic Dibra region along with its inhabitants and their nationally important agricultural production, but also an astonishing diversity of species. The project would affect, among others, the rare #BalkanLynx, of which only a few specimens still roam the forests of the south-western Balkans. The efforts of EuroNatur - Stiftung Europäisches Naturerbe and its partners CEE Bankwatch Network and Group of Rural Activists of Dibra within the “Save the Blue Heart of Europe” campaign, aiming to protect the last free-flowing stretch of the Black Drin River would be in vain with the construction of this giant #dam. This is a sad example of how the destruction of rivers for energy has much wider implications.
