🌱 Legislation: Microplastics in Focus 🌍 The EU's recent move to restrict microplastics intentionally added to products marks a significant step towards environmental protection. These tiny, persistent particles pose a threat to ecosystems and human health, prompting crucial regulatory action. But what does this mean for businesses? From cosmetics to coatings, the impact is wide-ranging. Manufacturers and distributors must adapt to new regulations, navigating transitional periods and compliance requirements. But amidst challenges lie opportunities for innovation and sustainable practices. Want to delve deeper into this crucial topic? Is there a substance that you believe should be added to the ZDHC MRSL or ZDHC Wastewater Guidelines? Then let us know via the ZDHC Submission Platform! This is the best way to share your experience, your evidence and why that substance should be included in our programme. The ZDHC Submission Platform is part of our effort to engage in productive two-way communication with all stakeholders, whether or not they are part of the fashion industry. We want to hear from you, and are keen to gather your input. Sustainable chemical management is key for the health of our communities, and the people who live and work near facilities are often the first to notice when something goes amiss. If we are missing something, we want to know about it! Any submissions made through this platform will go through a transparent process with a clear set of standards to ensure an objective evaluation of your proposal. ❗ Regulation is paralysing the industry – are innovations falling by the wayside? ❗ PFAS and how to formulate high-performance coatings without this class of substances is on everyone's lips. This is a major challenge in R&D laboratories and sometimes determines day-to-day business. There is no time left for innovation, research and the famous thinking outside the box to inspire new ideas. I have the impression that the regulations that have to be met have a firm grip on the coatings industry, because PFAS is only one of many issues. The online European Coatings Conference "Can & Coil Coatings", taking place on 18 September covers also the formulation of PFAS-free systems. 🔔 Secure your seat now: https://lnkd.in/eZXEWGjZ There are other classes of substances whose legislative requirements must be observed and fulfilled, e.g. biocides. In some coating systems, they are indispensable. In these systems, approved biocides are needed in the right dose. In other systems, alternatives are possible that must, of course, be tested before they are used. And don't forget that a functioning recipe has to be reformulated. The digital European Coatings Conference "Biocides and Alternatives" provides an overview. 🔔 Check out the programme now: https://lnkd.in/e6c6vjgE

“If we continue with business-as-usual greenhouse gas emissions, there is no adaptation that is possible. You just can’t.” Quote: Katharine Hayhoe. Picture source: biodiversitystripes.info and LPI 2022. Opinions my own.
#PFAS forever chemicals (hier ist eine Karte für die #Schweiz: https://lnkd.in/eaXf94_j): Producers of forever chemicals knew as early as 1961 that their products are #harmful for #health - now they are everywhere. The stark fact that #exposure cannot be avoided (and no-one can claim it's people's freedom to self-poison they defend by shielding polluters from liability) may set a huge wave of #litigation in motion, #shifting #responsibility for their #cleanup at contaminated sites from #taxpayers to #polluters: "Unlike tobacco, used by only a subset of the public, “pretty much every one of us in the United States is walking around with PFAS in our bodies,” said Erik Olson, senior strategic director for environmental health at the Natural Resources Defense Council. “And we’re being exposed without our knowledge or consent, often by industries that knew how dangerous the chemicals were, and failed to disclose that,” he said. “That’s a formula for really significant liability.”"

🌍 Why Discuss Microplastics and Exemptions? 🌊 Microplastics are a growing environmental and health concern, found everywhere from oceans to our food chain. Effective regulations are essential, but we must also consider exemptions and derogations to balance environmental protection with industry needs. 🔍 Key Points: · Environmental Impact: Persistent pollution affecting wildlife. · Human Health Risks: Potential ingestion and inhalation risks. · Regulatory Challenges: Varied sources and forms complicate regulation. · Industry Impact: Ensuring regulations don't disrupt vital sectors. · Innovation: Encouraging safer alternatives. · International Standards: Harmonizing global regulations. By addressing exemptions, we create balanced, adaptive policies that protect our planet while fostering innovation. Let's work together for a sustainable future! 🌱 Don’t miss the opportunity to attend our webinar, where we will discuss the global context of the environmental issues of the microplastics and the ECHA restriction. Definitions will be presented for a microplastic, as well as the exemptions and the possible derogations. We will explain the process of how to conform with Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 and how Intertek can help. France has taken significant steps in addressing microplastic pollution through its loi Anti-Gaspillage pour une économie circulaire (Anti-Waste Law for a Circular Economy, also known as AGEC law) in Decree No. 2022-748 of 04/29/2022. This legislation places stringent requirements on businesses to inform the consumer of the presence of plastic microfibres within their products on a dedicated website or webpage. To assist businesses in achieving compliance with France’s microplastic regulations, Eurofins offers state-of-the-art microplastic testing services which can be instrumental in helping companies meet the demands of AGEC law’s microplastics mandate. 4moPersonally, I think that the regulation of (micro)plastics is a really important step towards protecting the ecosystem and therefore also us. According to experts, however, the products concerned are only a comparatively small source of microplastics in the environment. The current law does not take sufficient or any account of microplastics, which are also produced, for example, by abrasion from textiles or car tires and by the fact that plastic waste slowly decomposes into smaller and smaller pieces under environmental influences. And this makes up by far the largest proportion. Nevertheless, it is a start towards minimizing sources that are supposedly easier to eliminate. It remains to be seen whether the implementations over the next few years will show that it has made a difference, because at the moment it still seems a little impractical to me as a long-standing consultant and has the smell of a new administrative monster. But I sincerely hope that it will be successful... And I also secretly hope that the further plans will include good measures to reduce these other unaccounted-for plastics.
