The EP Special Committee on #Housing is now a reality! The real name is the 'special committee on the Housing Crisis in the European Union, and defining its responsibilities, numerical strength and term of office' which indicates there will be many elements of the EU's interventions on housing in the short to medium term that will debated and decided on by this committee based on principles of affordability, availability, inclusivity, and sustainability, among others. Two highlights are that as part of a range of responsibilities, the Special Committee will 📈 analyse the impact of housing speculation; and 🏘️ assess the impact of non-profit and limited-profit housing solutions, such as social or cooperative housing, on the affordability and accessibility of housing for different groups. 📣 📃 The European CLT Network look forward to contributing to those efforts as part of the development and the future implementation of the European affordable housing plan (EAHP)! https://lnkd.in/eg3SamMz

❓ Right to Housing: How can the right to housing be upheld in a neoliberal and colonial context? In this new #openaccess 🔓 article by Sarah Cooper, the intersection of human and Indigenous rights with the provision of low-rent non-market housing in Canada is examined. As discussions about colonialism and retrenchment from the welfare state, including social housing, emerge, addressing housing needs in a way that respects both human and Indigenous rights becomes more urgent. The study, based on questionnaires and interviews with 28 non-profit housing providers across British Columbia, Manitoba, and New Brunswick, identifies barriers and strategies for advancing the right to housing in Canada’s settler-colonial capitalist context. Good folks! ─ this is dire! ... 🔔 🔔 🔔 👉 662% INCREASE 👈 🔔 🔔 🔔 in families placed by London boroughs in B&Bs from April 2022 to April 2024 ❗ ❗ ❗ ❗ ❗ 👉 Since 2012-13, boroughs’ net spending on B&B Accommodation has risen from £1.3m in 2012-13 to £207m in 2023-24, representing a 16,300% INCREASE ─ SIXTEEN THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED PER CENT ─ Wow blimey‼ 👉 The number of families living in B&Bs beyond the six-week limit rocketed from 114 to 1,600 over the past two years ... 👉 Currently, there are 320,000 households on waiting lists for social housing in London ... 👉 Rough sleeping has risen by 58% over the past 10 years ... 🔴 As of March 2024, there were 183,715 people living in temporary accommodation in the capital. Almost 90,000 of these individuals were children, meaning on average there is at least one homeless child in every London classroom 🔴
